In 2023, more than 1.8 million Americans finalized divorces, with approximately one-third of adults who have ever married having experienced divorce at some point.

Interestingly, many individuals who go through a divorce often form new families through remarriage, cohabitation, or having more children.

Data reveals that about 66% of divorced adults have remarried, and for those who are currently remarried, 46% have had children with their new spouse.

A recent analysis by the Pew Research Center delves into vital trends concerning divorce in the U.S., pulling its insights from various federal data sources including the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and the American Community Survey (ACS).

The analysis focuses on key divorce statistics, employing the refined divorce rate, which evaluates the number of divorces per 1,000 married women aged 15 and older.

This measurement accounts for variations in the married population, especially considering the downward trend in marriage rates over the past few decades.

The refined divorce rate in the U.S. peaked at 22.6 divorces per 1,000 married women around 1980 but has substantially declined to 14.4 per 1,000 in 2023.

The reduction in divorce rates can partly be attributed to the increasing educational attainment among those who marry.
