Experience the Spectacle of ‘Moulin Rouge: The Musical!’ in San Diego

The hit touring production of “Moulin Rouge: The Musical!” is currently captivating audiences in San Diego, running at the San Diego Civic Theatre until July 6th. Set to dazzle with an extravagant blend of rhinestones, remixes, and romance, this adaptation promises an exhilarating theatrical experience.

Adapted from Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film, this stage version amplifies the story and spectacle even further. Romantic and flashy, it’s a true jukebox musical, layering pop hits from various artists into its narrative, making it a celebration of sound and vision that’s hard to resist.

Directed by Tony Award-winning Alex Timbers, with a potent book by John Logan, the show features electrifying choreography by Sonya Tayeh. Audiences are taken on a wild ride, where more is indeed more, and every scene draws you deeper into a world of fantasy.

The storyline follows Christian, played by Jay Armstrong Johnson, a starry-eyed writer who finds himself entangled in a love triangle with the glamorous Satine, portrayed by Arianna Rosario, and the wealthy Duke of Monroth, played by Andrew Brewer. Rosario brings a vibrant energy to her role, infusing Satine with a magnetic charisma, while Johnson’s portrayal of Christian shifts from naive to earnest, lending sincerity to his character’s romantic pursuits.

Brewer’s Duke moves beyond the typical villain archetype; he adds a droll and unexpected depth, making him a standout figure who provides a refreshing contrast to Christian’s earnest demeanor. Robert Petkoff takes on the role of Harold Zidler, the mastermind behind the Moulin Rouge, navigating the intricate web of relationships while embodying the essence of spectacle.

While some updates in the narrative resonate well, others falter slightly. Actor Jahi Kearse enriches the character of Toulouse by bringing warmth and a shared history with Satine, illustrating the complexities of their past. However, updates, such as Christian’s new American identity from Lima, Ohio, can create inconsistencies, making certain plot elements feel cumbersome.

Visually, the production excels in its grand design. From the moment the red velvet curtain rises, the audience is swept away by the kinetic energy of the ensemble cast. The luxurious costumes by Catherine Zuber shimmer, with a blend of corsetry, lace, and leather that creates a feast for the eyes.

Derek McLane’s scenic design skillfully marries elements from the film with practical stage techniques, enhancing the immersive experience. The impressive lighting by Justin Townsend bathes the stage in rich jewel tones, further enthralling the audience.

This touring production stands out for its visual and auditory richness, showcasing the extensive talents of the entire cast and crew. It successfully transforms the beloved film into a three-dimensional performance that invites viewers to indulge in its drama and romance.

“Moulin Rouge: The Musical!” is an invitation to escape into a world defined by Truth, Beauty, Freedom, and Love. For those seeking a vibrant theatrical escape filled with energy, emotion, and extravagance, it’s a must-see.
