New England Revolution Set for Showdown with Portland Timbers at Providence Park

PORTLAND, Ore. (July 5, 2025) – The New England Revolution and Portland Timbers FC are set to clash tonight at Providence Park in a much-anticipated MLS matchup, kicking off at 10:30 p.m. ET. Fans can tune in via the MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app, available in both English and Spanish, or listen to the live commentary on 98.5 The Sports Hub (WBZ-FM) and 1260 AM Nossa Radio USA for Portuguese coverage.

As the Revolution aim to make history tonight, they are striving to break their existing club record by extending their impressive seven-game unbeaten streak on the road, which stands at 4 wins and 3 draws. This streak ties the longest unbeaten run in the club’s history, previously achieved in 2003 and 2019.

Interestingly, the Revolution and Timbers have had a series of tightly contested matches, with their last five encounters ending in draws. The most recent of these ends was a 2-2 tie at Providence Park when the two sides opened the 2022 MLS campaign.

Heading into the weekend, New England has demonstrated solid defensive capabilities, having allowed just 21 goals this season, marking them as one of the teams with the fewest goals conceded in MLS. Their last match against Colorado showcased a remarkable offensive burst, with the Revolution managing to score three goals in the final 32 minutes, including stoppage time.

Caleb Porter, the Timbers’ head coach, will have a unique experience as he returns to the Providence Park sidelines, but this time on the opposing team’s bench. Porter coached the Timbers from 2013 to 2017, leading them to their first MLS Cup title in 2015, as well as achieving two first-place finishes in the Western Conference during his tenure.

One of the standout players to watch tonight is midfielder Carles Gil, who is in excellent form. He recently accomplished his 12th goal-and-assist performance in the last match against Colorado, contributing to the team’s three-goal effort. Over the last 14 starts, Gil has amassed 13 goal contributions (7 goals and 6 assists), placing him just four contributions shy of tying the club record held by Taylor Twellman. Furthermore, Gil has received six MLS Team of the Matchday selections and ranks second in the league with 98 shot-creating actions.

On the defensive front, goalkeeper Aljaž Ivačič will be facing his former club for the first time since parting ways with the Timbers after a five-year stint between 2019-2023. Ivačič led the league in saves last season and was honored as the Timbers Supporters’ MVP. This season, he has recorded a career-high seven clean sheets, while boasting a 74.6 save percentage, ranking him fifth in MLS.

Defender Tanner Beason is also a player to keep an eye on as he approaches a personal milestone. Beason is set to make his 100th start in MLS regular-season play. He played a pivotal role in last week’s draw against Colorado by providing the game-tying assist, marking his first assist for New England. Since stepping into a starting role during April, New England’s record has improved to 5-2-5, with six clean sheets out of their last 12 games. Additionally, Beason ranks second in MLS for blocked shots, with a total of 22 this season.

In terms of individual milestones, midfielder Matt Polster will be marking his 150th appearance in MLS tonight, making it his 15th start of the current season. Fellow midfielder Alhassan Yusuf, who made his 19th start last week, also showcased his skills with three key passes against Colorado, tying his personal single-game record.

Forward Leo Campana returns to the starting lineup for a second consecutive match after an injury hiatus, and since 2022, he has joined an elite group of MLS players, including Sam Surridge and Lionel Messi, who have scored at least 30 goals in less than 5,500 minutes played.

In other noteworthy developments, Brayan Ceballos scored his first MLS goal on June 25 against Nashville, while young defender Peyton Miller is set to make his 25th start in all competitions this season, also marking his 25th MLS appearance. The promising 17-year-old has already made a notable impact with one goal and one assist this season.

The Revolution will also welcome back defender Mamadou Fofana to the starting lineup for his 18th start of the year, as he leads the team with 96 clearances. Brandon Bye will be starting his sixth match of the season, filling in for Ilay Feingold, who is recovering from an ankle injury.

Maxi Urruti, a forward for New England, faces his former team for the 15th time since leaving Portland after winning the MLS Cup in 2015. He was instrumental during the recent comeback against Colorado, scoring a dramatic equalizer. Throughout his career against the Timbers, Urruti has recorded one goal and two assists.

Lastly, there are several intriguing connections between the two teams, as Revolution head coach Caleb Porter previously led the Timbers, and other coaching staff members have ties to Portland as well. The overlap extends to players, including goalkeeper Ivačič and forward Urruti, both of whom have participated in significant achievements with the Timbers. The stage is set for an exciting contest in the Pacific Northwest, making this matchup one that fans will not want to miss.
