Chef Marc Zimmerman’s New Superprime Steakhouse Set to Open Following Yokai’s Closure

Chef Marc Zimmerman, renowned for his exceptional steakhouse skills, is launching a new dining experience in San Francisco called Superprime Steakhouse. Scheduled to open on Friday, July 18, at 545 Mission Street, this new venture marks Zimmerman’s return to steak-centered cuisine after his previous establishment, Gozu, transitioned to a menu inspired by Californian and Japanese flavors.

Superprime Steakhouse will take over the space previously occupied by Yokai, a Japanese-inspired listening bar that Zimmerman opened in 2023. The transition will occur as Yokai winds down operations on Thursday, July 17, with an Instagram announcement confirming the shift in concepts.

For fans of Yokai, there is good news: Superprime Steakhouse will retain a selection of favorite dishes from the former restaurant. Items such as the beloved uni toast, signature skewers, and the Hokkaido-style milk buns will still be available for diners to enjoy.

The new steakhouse will offer an impressive lineup of substantial steaks, including a “monster” porterhouse steak that weighs in at 2.5 pounds, alongside dry-aged, bone-in New York and filet steaks, as well as a bone-in ribeye. Wagyu will feature prominently on the menu in various formats, catering to steak aficionados. Additionally, the menu will include raw items like yellowtail sashimi and a “not steak” section that presents unique choices such as a burger on a Hawaiian bun, marinated duck breast, and steamed miso ling cod.

In other San Francisco culinary news, the beloved Berkeley restaurant Grégoire is expanding with a new location in the city. The new Grégoire will take over a former Jamba Juice space at the intersection of 9th Avenue and Irving Street. This expansion will be a franchise of the original concept, with plans to ensure consistent quality through a central kitchen located in Emeryville. The opening is expected in November.

Additionally, British social media influencer Jason Hackett, better known as Prime Mutton, is making waves in San Francisco this week. Renowned for his charming beer reviews, Hackett is on a tour of the U.S. and is currently visiting various Irish bars in the city. He kicked off his journey with a meetup at Glen Park Station on Sunday, July 6. His packed itinerary includes visits to popular spots like the Plough and the Stars and Northstar Cafe on Monday, July 7, and more on Tuesday and Wednesday.

As San Francisco moves beyond the Fourth of July celebrations, locals can start looking forward to the upcoming Bastille Day festivities. This year, the city’s Belden Place will host its annual Bastille Day celebration on Friday, July 11, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Participants can expect a delightful atmosphere as restaurants such as Sam’s Grill and Cafe Tiramisu present French-themed dishes, complemented by a special pop-up from Maison Nico.

The celebration will also feature live music, photo opportunities with giant croissants, and complimentary berets while supplies last. For those interested in partaking in this vibrant cultural experience, more details are available on event websites.

San Francisco’s dining scene is abuzz with exciting new developments, from the opening of Superprime Steakhouse to Grégoire’s expansion, and the lively Bastille Day festivities, providing something for every food lover in the city.
