Rivian Unveils Powerful R1 Quad with Unique Features and Impressive Specs

Rivian has hosted an exclusive event at Lake Tahoe to showcase the capabilities of its latest quad-motor powertrain, debuting in the R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV.

The latest generation of Rivian’s R1 platform had previously been limited to dual and tri-motor variants. Now, the quad-motor configuration is making a return, a decision that raises questions about its timing and purpose in today’s electric vehicle landscape.

Beginning with the specifications, the R1 Quad stands out as a vehicular powerhouse. With a starting price tag of $120,000, it boasts over 1,000 horsepower and an astonishing 1,200 lb-ft of torque.

The starting prices for the R1T and R1S are $115,990 USD ($190,990 CAD) and $121,990 USD ($201,990 CAD) respectively, with deliveries slated for summer 2025. For those interested in the Launch Edition, the R1T is priced starting at $119,990 USD ($196,990 CAD) and the R1S at $125,990 USD ($207,990 CAD). This reintroduction of the Launch Edition aims to celebrate Rivian’s commitment to performance and adventure.

A destination and freight charge of $1,895 USD ($2,695 CAD) is also applicable.

In terms of performance, the new R1 Quad is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 MPH in just 2.5 seconds for the R1T and 2.6 seconds for the R1S. Its quarter-mile time stands at an impressive 10.5 seconds, with a maximum velocity of 130 mph. The EPA estimates that it can achieve up to 374 miles of range, or up to 400 miles when in Conserve mode.

One unique feature making a comeback is the ‘Kick Turn,’ which allows the vehicle to spin in place, a concept originally introduced in Rivian’s first quad models but never included in their production versions.

To execute the Kick Turn, drivers push both buttons on the steering wheel in the direction they wish to turn, rather than using the steering wheel itself. This maneuver is designed for off-roading situations, allowing for better navigation through tight spaces.

Although fun and functional, Rivian has warned that the Kick Turn is best performed on gravel and loose dirt. However, the feature’s utility in everyday driving scenarios, like parallel parking or U-turns, is enticing.

Owners of the original Rivian Quads will miss out on this capability, as the company claims that the older controllers are not precise enough to support the Kick Turn.

Regarding wheels and tires, the R1 Quad offers four different options:

– 22” Super Sport
– 22” Sport Burnished Bronze
– 20” All-Terrain Dark
– 20” Dune Satin Graphite All-Terrain

The new Launch Editions will highlight a suite of special features, including:

– Exclusive “Launch Edition” IP badge
– Unique color options like Launch Green paint with Black Mountain + Brown interior and Storm Blue paint with Slate Sky + Walnut Wood interior
– Additional amenities such as a Camp Speaker, Gen 2 Key fob, and features under Rivian’s offerings like Lifetime Rivian Autonomy Platform+ and Lifetime Connect+

One of the most significant additions to the R1 Quad is its charging port, which supports the North American Charging Standard (NACS). This allows users to charge the vehicle at most Tesla stations without requiring an adapter. However, to charge at other network stations, including Rivian’s own, users will still need the included CCS adapter until Rivian updates their chargers.

At the event, representatives from Rivian had success using the vehicle at a V4 Supercharger, although testing of charging speeds was limited due to the pre-driven condition of the vehicles.

Another innovative feature includes the RAD Tuner, which allows drivers to customize their driving modes. The RAD Tuner, an exclusive feature for the Quad, lets drivers optimize their vehicle’s dynamic behavior using sliders to create personalized and savable modes for different driving conditions.

Rivian has included several presets for drivers, such as:

– Desert Rally mode, developed during the 2023 Rebelle Rally
– Hill Climb mode, engineered from experiences at the renowned Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

To enhance the driving experience, Rivian has also introduced the Launch Cam feature, which enables users to record their Launch Mode runs, including impressive 0-60 decisions where they might outpace supercars. These recordings come with overlays showing real-time statistics such as speed and distance.

However, Rivian noted that the interior camera for capturing passengers’ reactions is no longer included, a decision that may disappoint some buyers.

Overall, while the Rivian R1 Quad may not cater to mass-market desires with its starting price around $120K, it represents the epitome of Rivian’s adventurous spirit in the EV marketplace. It offers features that will satisfy high-performance enthusiasts.

Its ability to fit seven passengers, dominate off-road terrains, and beat many supercars off the line while providing a unique turning feature makes the R1 Quad a noteworthy addition to Rivian’s lineup. Although the more accessible dual-motor variants may continue to see the bulk of sales, the R1 Quad raises the bar for electric trucks and SUVs, emphasizing Rivian’s commitment to adventure, performance, and innovation.
