Kokandy Productions is set to enchant Chicago audiences with the premiere of the musical “Amélie,” based on the beloved 2001 film.
Slated to run from July 17 to September 28, 2025, the production will take place at the Chopin Downstairs Studio located at 1543 W. Division St.
The entire basement of the Chopin, encompassing the lobby, bar, and cafe, will immerse attendees in the whimsical journey of Amélie Poulain, a young woman who lives quietly in the world but experiences life vividly in her imagination.
Amélie, who engages in small yet impactful acts of kindness, sets off a chain reaction of joy and mayhem.
However, when love presents itself, Amélie must confront her fears and express her true feelings, discovering that true happiness requires vulnerability and risk.
Director Derek Van Barham expressed excitement for the production, describing it as a “charming jewel box of a musical.”
He noted that the whimsical nature of the show is perfectly suited to the venue’s eccentric and unique atmosphere.
“Amélie Poulain reminds us to focus on goodness and to look for love wherever we can,” Van Barham stated.
“Whether you’re a fan of the cult classic film or experiencing this whimsical tale for the first time, there is something delightful and heartwarming for everyone.”
The show features original music by Daniel Messé, lyrics by Messé and Nathan Tysen, and a book by Craig Lucas.
Musical direction will be handled by T.J. Anderson and Anna Wegener, ensuring that the musical’s score captivates the audience.
Leading the cast is Aurora Penepacker in the role of Amélie.
The colorful characters surrounding her include Todd Aulwurm as Hipolito Jeunet, Lucas Burr as Blind Beggar, and Rachel Carreras portraying Amandine Poulain and Philomene de Noirpois.
Joe Giovannetti takes on the role of Nino Quincampoix, while Sonia Goldberg plays Gina Wells.
The cast also features notable performances by Sam Hook, Mizha Lee Overn, Jon Patrick Penick, Quinn Rigg, Samantha Ringor, and Kelan M. Smith.
Many cast members will not only act but also play musical instruments, adding an extra layer to the immersive experience of the production.
