SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake Chamber, in collaboration with the University of Utah’s Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute, has unveiled the June 2025 Roadmap to Prosperity Economic Dashboard, aiming to provide valuable insight into Utah’s economic landscape for business leaders.
This economic tool emphasizes essential data regarding the state’s economic forecast, offering actionable intelligence for decision-makers.
Derek Miller, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber, noted the positive signs of recovery as Utah enters the summer season. Miller highlighted the year-over-year increases in airport travel, coinciding with the busy travel months ahead.
“Utah’s rising consumer sentiment, while still lower than it was at the close of 2024, signals cautious optimism as Utahns adjust to the changing economic environment,” he remarked.
Miller also emphasized the significant uptick in new construction activity since the pandemic, underscoring the resilience of Utah’s economy.
The June 2025 Roadmap to Prosperity Dashboard outlines three crucial insights into the current economic situation:
First, consumer confidence has experienced a rebound; however, it continues to trail behind levels from December 2024. Utah’s consumer sentiment index saw a modest rise of 1.5%, moving from 81.1 in May to 82.3 in June. In contrast, the U.S. consumer sentiment had a more substantial increase of 16.3%, climbing from 52.2 in May to 60.7 in June.
Nonetheless, both indices remain significantly lower than their respective values in December 2024, reflecting ongoing concerns regarding U.S. trade policy, inflation expectations, and global geopolitical uncertainties.
Secondly, the dashboard reports that new construction activity has reached a post-pandemic peak in May, marking a notable achievement. Construction in Utah achieved its highest levels since March 2020, largely due to a significant new development by Texas Instruments in Lehi.
With a non-residential construction permit value reaching approximately $850 million in May 2025, this represents more than a threefold increase compared to the same month in 2024.
Lastly, the beginning of the summer travel season indicates robust passenger growth. Salt Lake International Airport reported a total of 2,424,843 passengers in May 2025, which marks an increase of 9.1% from April and a 1.33% rise from the same period last year.
This year-over-year growth signifies a sustained recovery in travel demand as the summer season commences.
The Roadmap to Prosperity Dashboard is updated monthly to provide leaders with timely insights, tracking relevant indicators to aid informed decision-making.
Natalie Gochnour, director of the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute, stated that Utah’s economy continues to show resilience, particularly with the rebound in consumer sentiment and record levels of new construction.
Despite these encouraging trends, she cautioned that uncertainties surrounding trade policies and rising inflation expectations persist.
