In a personal reflection, Dallas-based author and English professor Shewanda Riley shares her transformative experience with a skin condition that illuminated the value of paying attention to the finer details in life.
A few years ago, Riley encountered a skin issue that forced her to forgo makeup for nearly four months. While it wasn’t life-threatening, the experience caused considerable distress when she had to deal with stitches on her face for a week.
Initially noticing small, odd bumps on her right cheek in mid-January, Riley did not take action until the condition worsened. This delay in addressing the issue left her realizing the financial burden of medical bills and prescriptions that could have been avoided had she responded sooner.
Fortunately, the skin condition eventually cleared up, leading to numerous compliments about her skin’s newfound glow, which coincided with her decision to stop using makeup. However, Riley reflects on the mystery of how the condition ended, expressing gratitude for its resolution while recognizing the lessons learned throughout the ordeal.
During this challenging time, Riley discovered the necessity of being vigilant about even the slightest details. She found herself constantly checking her face in the mirror, hoping for any sign of improvement. She diligently applied prescribed creams and engaged in fervent prayers, trusting that God would restore her complexion.
Echoing her faith, Riley cites Matthew 10:29-31, illustrating God’s attention to the small details in our lives: “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
Being an English professor and journalist, professions that rely heavily on understanding the nuances of language and storytelling, Riley feels an intrinsic inclination to notice small details. However, she acknowledges the constant distractions in her daily life that challenge her ability to remain focused on these details.
Despite these distractions, she emphasizes the importance of staying mindful, understanding that while she may occasionally overlook the details, God remains ever attentive.
In her upcoming columns, Riley looks forward to sharing more insights on the significance of paying attention to the smallest aspects of life, drawn from her personal experiences and reflections on her faith journey.
