Cator Sparks Shares His Favorite Spots in Atlanta After Returning Home

After a rewarding career in beauty and fashion communications, Cator Sparks, who hails from Atlanta, made the transition into full-time journalism.

During his time in New York City and later Charleston, Sparks made a name for himself as a writer and editor, contributing extensively to travel and lifestyle publications.

In 2020, he shifted his focus towards life coaching, becoming a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC), and earning accolades for his work, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community.

In 2024, after spending 25 years away, Sparks returned to Atlanta, drawn back by the city’s vibrant diversity and welcoming queer community.

In a conversation with Wallpaper*, he shares his insights on how to fully experience and enjoy Atlanta’s unique charm.

**Where to Stay**

For accommodations, Sparks highly recommends the Hotel Clermont Atlanta.

He describes it as ‘the coolest and most amusing place to stay in Atlanta,’ noting the lively atmosphere at its French-American brasserie, Tiny Lou’s, as well as the hotel’s buzzing lobby and rooftop bars.

However, the standout feature of the hotel is The Clermont Lounge, which holds the title of the oldest strip bar in town.

Address: Hotel Clermont Atlanta, 789 Ponce De Leon Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30306, United States.

**Where to Eat and Drink**

Sparks suggests Banshee as a must-visit restaurant.

Recognized with awards, it offers a laid-back atmosphere and a queer-friendly staff.

Located in East Atlanta, Banshee is celebrated for its farm-to-table menu—particularly the Korean beef cheek agnolotti when available—as well as an impressive selection of craft cocktails and local beers.

Address: Banshee, 1271 Glenwood Ave SE, Atlanta, GA 30316, United States.

For those in search of a more relaxed vibe without the wild dance parties, Stereo is another recommendation from Sparks.

It is a cozy listening lounge that features a great bar and easygoing atmosphere.

Address: Stereo, 900 DeKalb Ave NE suite f, Atlanta, GA 30307, United States.

Sparks also highlights The Varsity, known as ‘The Greasy V,’ an iconic establishment in Atlanta since 1928.

Claiming to be the world’s largest drive-in, it is famous for its hot dogs, fries, and onion rings.

Sparks advises patrons to experience the diner vibe by eating inside.

Address: The Varsity, 61 North Avenue NW, Atlanta, GA 30308, United States.

**What to Do**

Visitors to Atlanta should not miss The Goat Farm Arts Center, an impressive venue that combines art, performance, and design in a 19th-century industrial building.

Address: The Goat Farm Arts Center, 1200 Foster St NW, Atlanta, GA 30318, United States.

Another highlight is The Jackson Street Bridge, a popular spot known for its sweeping views of downtown Atlanta.

Having been featured in the pilot episode of The Walking Dead, it has become a favorite location for sunset photos.

With a bike lane and sidewalk, visitors can easily reach the bridge by Uber or find street parking at 433 John Wesley Dobbs Ave NE.

This is an ideal spot for anyone looking to unleash their inner content creator.

Address: The Jackson Street Bridge, 433 Freedom Park Trail, Atlanta, GA 30312, United States.

**Where to Shop**

For local shopping, Sparks recommends Floral Park Market, a family-owned establishment reminiscent of a quaint country shop in the heart of the city.

The market focuses on local products, offering everything from home goods to baked items, chocolates, and flowers.

Address: Floral Park Market, 775 Trabert Ave NW, Atlanta, GA 30318, United States.

Lastly, Ponce City Market should also be on the itinerary.

Housed in the historic Sears, Roebuck & Co. building from 1926, this market features an impressive combination of retail shops, restaurants, hotels, and office space.

Visitors can enjoy the fantastic food hall and shopping, and then take a stroll on the roof to experience the Atlanta BeltLine.

Address: Ponce City Market, 675 Ponce De Leon Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30308, United States.

Sparks’ return to Atlanta has not only reconnected him with his roots but also reignited his passion for sharing the city’s treasures with both locals and visitors alike.
