Dallas County’s Human Trafficking Unit Celebrates Initial Convictions

DALLAS — The newly formed human trafficking unit of the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office is marking a significant milestone with its first two convictions, just months after its launch earlier this year in January.

Administrative Chief Amy Derrick shared insights about the complexity involved in handling human trafficking cases.

“Human trafficking is an extremely complicated and complex type of case to not only investigate, but also to prosecute, and then also offer services to our victims,” Derrick stated.

Recognizing the need for focused attention on these intricate cases, the Dallas County created a dedicated unit composed of a prosecutor, an investigator, and a victim advocate.

This team is singularly focused on pursuing justice and facilitating healing for survivors of human trafficking throughout Dallas County.

In March, the unit achieved a major conviction against 33-year-old Karen Villegas.

Court records reveal that Villegas coerced her teenage stepdaughter into prostitution while retaining the profits.
