A significant spiritual initiative is emerging in Denver, promising to enhance the spiritual lives of Catholics through the newly established Ignatian Discernment Institute (IDI).
Launched in January 2025 by the Oblates of the Virgin Mary (OMVs), the IDI aims to expand access to the profound tradition of spiritual discernment rooted in Catholic spirituality, particularly the teachings of St. Ignatius of Loyola.
This initiative builds upon the important groundwork laid by Father Timothy Gallagher, OMV, who has dedicated decades to interpreting and teaching the discernment of spirits, particularly St. Ignatius’ 14 “First Week” rules.
Father Gallagher has been influential in making these teachings accessible beyond specialized Ignatian centers, transforming the way many perceive spiritual discernment.
Since the early 1980s, he has taught these discernment rules in various retreat settings, receiving feedback from participants who often express a desire for this knowledge earlier in their lives.
His work surged in popularity throughout the 1990s as he began offering his insights in parishes and priestly formation programs.
In 2005, he published the first of over 20 books, many translated into numerous languages, along with podcasts and media series, including notable programs on EWTN that have attracted hundreds of thousands of listeners across the globe.
Recognizing the growing demand for formation in discernment, Father Mark Yavarone, OMV, joined Father Gallagher in 2025.
With over 20 years of experience as a retreat leader and teacher, Father Yavarone has become a vital asset to this endeavor, and together they launched the Ignatian Discernment Institute.
A variety of events are scheduled for the fall of 2025 to engage Catholics in the Archdiocese of Denver.
On October 24, a one-day retreat led by Father Yavarone will take place at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Boulder, sponsored by the Serra Club of Boulder.
Interested participants can register by contacting Jan Landers via email at [email protected].
Another retreat is set for December 13 at Our Lady of Peace / St. Mary’s Parish in Silverthorne, CO, also led by Father Yavarone.
For more information or registration, individuals may call the parish office at 970-668-0250.
Additionally, Father Gallagher will conduct a four-day seminar from November 6–9 at the Lanteri Center for Ignatian Spirituality in Denver, aimed at those who are familiar with St. Ignatius’ rules and wish to guide or teach others.
Both in-person and online participation options will be available.
The IDI represents more than just a local initiative; it answers a widespread yearning within the Church for deeper prayer, clarity, and discernment in spiritual life.
Through this program, the faithful are equipped to discern the movements of the Holy Spirit and to recognize the obstacles that may arise.
Ultimately, the Ignatian Discernment Institute seeks to bring renewal to the Church, one soul at a time.
