This summer, Philadelphia’s waterfront is set to shine brighter than ever with the ‘Make Summer Yours’ initiative, bringing a plethora of seasonal activities and events to Spruce Street Harbor Park, Cherry Street Pier, Race Street Pier, and Summerfest.
As August approaches, visitors can anticipate a range of experiences designed to create lasting memories along the vibrant boardwalk at Independence Blue Cross RiverRink Summerfest, unwind in the urban oasis of Spruce Street Harbor Park, partake in wellness activities at Race Street Pier, and indulge in local art and food at Cherry Street Pier.
Joseph A. Forkin, President & CEO of the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, emphasized the summer offerings, stating, ‘Visitors can make new memories along our lively boardwalk.’
The month will see the continued celebration of cultural diversity with the 30th Anniversary PECO Multicultural Series, featuring notable events like the ACANA Africa Festival, Festival of India, and Caribbean Festival.
Taking place on August 3, the ACANA Festival is recognized as the largest African music festival on the East Coast.
On August 16, the Festival of India will celebrate its legacy in Philadelphia, marking a tradition that has been cherished since 1993.
Following closely on August 17, the Caribbean Festival will represent 15 Caribbean nations, including Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, and Dominica, creating a cultural tapestry not to be missed.
All of these vibrant events will take place at Cherry Street Pier, drawing abundant visitors from near and far.
For those looking to prioritize health and wellness, Race Street Pier will host ‘Wellness on the Waterfront’, which runs until September 30.
This program features various fitness classes, including yoga and Pilates, which take place every Monday and Thursday at 6 p.m., and Sundays at 10 a.m., weather permitting.
With every class offering stunning views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, participants can enjoy both fitness and sight.
Additionally, Race Street Pier will welcome ‘Mondo Cane’, a remarkable large-scale outdoor sculpture by local artist Jonathan Santoro, with an opening reception scheduled for August 1.
Just a short walk away, Summerfest promises its own array of summer fun.
This boardwalk-inspired attraction features carnival games, a rollerblading rink, and an assortment of seasonal delights.
Visitors can enjoy a ride on the ferris wheel, experience the nostalgic double-decker carousel, play mini-golf, engage in moon bounce antics, or try their luck at the arcade.
The Lodge Bar will serve as a hub for excitement, hosting special events throughout August.
Workshop Wednesdays on August 6, 13, 20, and 27 will offer creative classes, while Free Bingo Thursday Nights will take place on August 7 and 21.
On August 16, Summerfest will also feature a Planet Rock: ’80s-Themed DJ Night, followed by a character skate with figures from ‘Moana’ on August 24.
Spruce Street Harbor Park remains a favorite among locals, with its scenic views and food vendors enhancing the vibrant atmosphere.
Visitors can explore a variety of local beers, seasonal cocktails, and delightful snacks from vendors, including Chickie’s & Pete’s and Philly Tacos, in this colorful oasis.
The park’s ‘Lazy Hammock’ area offers a performance venue complete with a stage, bar, and a 16-foot video wall, making it ideal for entertainment.
Spruce Street Harbor Park will host several free events throughout August, including the Sunset at Spruce music festival on August 2, Family Fundays with PopUpPlay on August 3, 10, 17, and 24, and free Jazz Summer Nights on August 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29.
Additional entertainment will come from ‘After Work Sessions’ featuring various DJs on the same dates.
Music enthusiasts can also participate in the Summer Sounds Concert Series on August 30, featuring Dave Hause & The Mermaid, along with the Live and Local Concert Series on August 7, 14, 21, and 28, spotlighting local talent.
The ‘States of Change’ Flag Exhibition, showcasing works by six national and international artists, will be displayed alongside the unique exhibition by Austen Camille Weymueller, ‘Here, Twice A Day, We Are Held by the Ocean’.
Meanwhile, Cherry Street Pier will celebrate with a vibrant First Friday event on August 1, including exhibition openings, artist studio tours, local markets, and an array of food options.
Other programming includes the Live More Wellness Expo on August 9, various art classes with Amy Kelly, and a Botanical Wall Hanging workshop on August 24, ensuring that this month at Philly’s waterfront will be filled with creativity and culture.
