Chicago Air & Water Show Set for 2025: A Celebration of Aviation and Military Excellence

The City of Chicago, in collaboration with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), is gearing up for the 2025 Chicago Air & Water Show, scheduled to take place on August 16 and 17 along the city’s stunning lakefront.

This year marks the 66th edition of the Air & Water Show, which proudly stands as the largest free-admission event of its kind, attracting crowds from near and far.

The show, a cherished summer tradition for residents and visitors alike, will feature an impressive lineup of aerial performances, including two notable headliners: the U.S. Army Parachute Team Golden Knights and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds.

DCASE Commissioner Clinée Hedspeth expressed excitement about the upcoming event, stating, “This show captures the heart of summertime in Chicago — free, accessible, and thrilling for people of all ages. We’re excited to welcome back world-class performers like the Golden Knights who have an unforgettable weekend of entertainment planned for those taking in the show along our iconic skyline.”

One of the highlights of this year’s show will be the Warbird Thunder Airshows, which will feature the historic SNJ-2 and SNJ-3 aircraft.

These World War II-era planes were once crucial for training combat pilots for U.S. military missions in both World War II and the Korean War.

Known for their deep, throaty roar, “Ol Growler” will lead a fast-paced formation routine that includes loops, rolls, and thrilling maneuvers, showcasing aerodynamics and piloting skill that many pilots in history have personally experienced.

In addition to the thrilling aerial displays, this year’s show has a commemorative purpose.

It will honor the 250th anniversary of the United States Army and United States Marine Corps, recognizing their longstanding and historic contributions to the nation in conjunction with the celebrations at the Chicago Air & Water Show.

Mayor Brandon Johnson emphasized the significance of the event, calling it one of the city’s most beloved traditions, stating, “The Chicago Air & Water Show brings together residents and visitors from around the world to enjoy an exciting, family-friendly experience on our beautiful lakefront. We are proud to celebrate the incredible skill and dedication of our servicemen and women while showcasing the very best of Chicago.”

The shows will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day, with North Avenue Beach serving as the show center, providing excellent views of the thrilling performances.
