Fans of classic theater are known for their staunch preservation of beloved narratives, but perceptions seem to be shifting, particularly on the recent tour of the musical & Juliet.
Teal Wicks, who plays Anne Hathaway, William Shakespeare’s wife, has noted a marked joy among audiences, indicating a willingness to embrace a fresh take on the iconic tale of Romeo and Juliet.
The musical, which will be staged at Keller Auditorium from August 5-10 as the finale of Broadway in Portland’s 2024-25 season, reimagines the tragic ending of Shakespeare’s original story.
In this vibrant retelling, while Romeo succumbs to poison, Juliet fortifies her strength and chooses to live life on her own terms, leaving the dagger unused.
Wicks shared her enthusiasm about the production’s theme, emphasizing the importance of creativity and empowerment in art.
The original narrative is turned on its head, focusing on Anne Hathaway’s role in steering her husband toward a narrative where Juliet asserts her independence.
“We’re creating the art,” Wicks explained, showcasing the musical’s underlying message of self-determination.
This modern adaptation features a dynamic score filled with pop songs from celebrated songwriter Max Martin, known for producing hits over the last thirty years.
With an engaging book crafted by Emmy-winning writer David West Read from Schitt’s Creek, and direction by Luke Sheppard, the show is a colorful explosion of humor and wit.
Wicks, who has a notable background including a role as Elphaba in Wicked, expressed her fondness for the iconic songs woven throughout the narrative.
The musical includes beloved hits like “Since You Been Gone” by Kelly Clarkson and “Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears, among others, creating a nostalgic yet fresh ambiance that resonates widely with diverse audiences.
“The music is deeply ingrained in our culture and evokes strong emotions tied to love and youth,” remarked Wicks.
Wicks’s portrayal of Anne Hathaway is pivotal, as she disrupts the traditional story path with clever twists and helps Juliet find her own voice and identity.
Wicks remarked on the audience’s reaction, stating she frequently hears comments like, “I like your ending better.” She agrees wholeheartedly, acknowledging a mature perspective on love drawn from her own experiences.
“While my 13-year-old self might yearn for the traditional love story, my current perspective embraces the trials and tribulations of life,” she added.
For those interested in catching the show, performances at Keller Auditorium are scheduled as follows: 7:30 p.m. from August 5 to August 8, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on August 9, and 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on August 10.
