Impact Arts Austin Presents JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR: A Captivating Rock Opera Experience

Since its introduction in 1970 as a concept album, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR has emerged as a stalwart of musical theater, engaging audiences with its unique rock opera interpretation of the last days of Jesus Christ.

Created by the talented duo Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, this groundbreaking work combines a contemporary musical style with profound biblical themes, igniting both acclaim and controversy over the years.

Following its debut on Broadway in 1971, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR solidified its place in cultural history, inspiring numerous international productions, film adaptations, and revivals that resonate with new audiences to this day.

In summer 2025, Austin theatergoers will have the chance to see this iconic musical brought to life once again, as Impact Arts Austin presents a heartfelt production that features a talented cast comprised of youth performers and returning alumni.

The show is directed by Ginger Morris and Greg Almanza, who previously collaborated on the well-regarded GUYS AND DOLLS for Summer Stock last year.

With a dynamic score and humanized characters, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR remains a captivating narrative that continues to engage audiences across generations.

Choreographed by Morris, along with Sara Burke—who also performs as Mary Magdalene—and Noah Wood, this rendition showcases impressive choreography that complements the live band, led by Music Director Adam Roberts, providing an enhanced experience for theatergoers.

The cast shines with the talent of Donelvan Thigpen and Coy, who take on the formidable roles of Judas and Jesus, respectively.

Thigpen’s portrayal of Judas, framed through the character’s complex emotional journey, pairs powerfully with Coy’s depiction of a compassionate and tormented Jesus.

Sara Burke’s performance as Mary Magdalene offers genuine support to Coy’s character, contributing to the emotional depth of the production.

The standout vocal performances within this production are further emphasized by the skillful direction of Music Director Adam Roberts, ensuring that every actor contributes to a harmonious and vibrant musical experience.

The depth of the narrative is also illustrated through the portrayal of secondary characters. Heller Award winner JP Lopez exudes passion and complexity in his role as Pontius Pilate, while Evan Schmitt impressively meets the vocal demands of Caiaphas.

Additionally, David Pena is granted ample opportunity to fully embody the narcissist Herod, delivering performance that does not disappoint.

Rachel Atkinson’s thoughtful lighting design and Francesca Hirvela’s adept board work elevate the visual aspect of this production, making it shine and resonate more profoundly with the audience.

Atkinson’s design encapsulates the ‘superstar’ aspect of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, effectively conveying the essence of the narrative.

It is worth noting that this production addresses mature themes, making it a departure from the typical lighthearted fare associated with Impact Arts.

Though audiences might anticipate a happy resolution, the narrative culminates a few days prior to tragic events, offering the cast a unique challenge that they have successfully met.

Audiences are encouraged to experience JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, which will run in rotation with MARY POPPINS THE MUSICAL, supporting the impactful work of Impact Arts Summer Stock until August 10, 2025.
