In an inspiring and unique twist of destiny, a 19-year-old from Levelland, Texas, recently took an oath to support and defend the United States alongside his father, a 41-year-old middle school English teacher.
This remarkable story begins with Eli Randol, who not only excelled academically but was also a standout athlete, being number one in tackles in the South Plains while playing football for Levelland High School.
Despite high expectations of pursuing a football scholarship, Eli made a surprising decision — opting to enlist in the Army instead. His father, Joshua Randol, explained Eli’s reasoning: “He thought if he was going to tear his body up, he might as well get a good medical education.”
Initially, Eli seemed indifferent toward the idea of military service during talks with his recruiter, Staff Sergeant Seth Adkins. However, as the school year drew to a close, Eli reached out to Adkins for an in-depth discussion at his home.
Adkins recounts that the conversation took a turn when Joshua joined in, humorously suggesting that he might be too old to enlist. It was during this meeting that Joshua learned he had just made the age cutoff at 41 years old.
Intrigued by the benefits of military service, Joshua arranged a quick conversation with his wife and decided to sign up as well. This duo’s simultaneous commitment to the Army is something Adkins has never encountered in his recruiting career.
While Eli’s motivation centered around obtaining a quality education, Joshua’s decision was driven by immediate benefits, including healthcare and a better salary compared to his teaching job.
“The Army offers me an instant pay raise based on my teacher salary,” Joshua said, reflecting on the positive aspects of their choice.
The father and son stood side by side for their swearing-in ceremony, marking a significant milestone in both their lives. Eli is currently undergoing basic training at Fort Sill in Oklahoma, while Joshua is set to depart for Fort Jackson in South Carolina in the coming weekend.
Reflecting on his journey, Joshua expressed his pride in being able to tackle basic training at 41. “To go out there and be able to say, ‘Hey, I can do this.’ That’s pretty cool,” he said.
In terms of benefits, Eli received a considerable signing bonus, while Joshua was thrilled about the possibility of being stationed in Germany after completing his training. “Here’s the cool thing. Married 24 years, right? After the end of the school year, my family would join me in Germany,” he mentioned with excitement.
He elaborated that this opportunity aligns perfectly with their long-standing dream of traveling to Europe, which coincides with their 25th wedding anniversary.
