The search for Giovanni Pelletier, an 18-year-old from North Carolina who went missing while vacationing in Florida, has taken a tragic turn. After a desperate search led by his family, they have confirmed that a body, believed to be Giovanni’s, has been discovered in a retention pond near Interstate 75 and State Route 70 in Florida.
On Friday, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office reported the discovery of a decomposing male body. However, authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the individual found, leading to a sense of uncertainty for the Pelletier family.
Giovanni’s mother, Bridgette Pelletier, took to social media to address the heartbreaking situation. In a post on what is believed to be her Facebook account, she expressed her anguish. “My son was recently found after a desperate search by OUR FAMILY ALONE, and we are still facing an active investigation into his death,” she wrote.
She described her current emotional state as every parent’s worst nightmare and emphasized the importance of privacy as her family navigates this painful loss.
The teen had been staying in Englewood, Florida, with his family as they visited a relative undergoing chemotherapy. On August 1, he had plans to meet with his paternal cousins after spending his early years in Florida before moving to North Carolina at the age of four.
The last known interaction with Giovanni occurred around 1:30 a.m. on the day of his disappearance, when his cousins picked him up. Unfortunately, it was the last time his family would see him. Bridgette shared that while she was asleep, Giovanni began to reach out for help, texting her the chilling words “Mom help” shortly before he disappeared.
In addition to texting his mother, Giovanni also attempted to call her and even tried to initiate a FaceTime call around 1:56 a.m. He reached out to his sister and her father requesting assistance as well. It wasn’t until hours later that Bridgette noticed the missed calls and texts, alongside a voicemail from Giovanni’s paternal grandfather informing her that something had gone wrong during their time together.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, Giovanni’s cousins explained to authorities that he began to act erratically during their time together. After allegedly smoking marijuana, Giovanni reportedly panicked, leading to a confrontation where he pulled out a knife.
Bridgette noted, “When that happened, they said they wrestled the knife from him, and then my son took off running.” She expressed disappointment that his cousins did not attempt to contact her to inquire about Giovanni’s well-being after he vanished.
Adding to her distress, Bridgette highlighted how she found Giovanni’s backpack and phone abandoned along the roadside, despite it being reported that he would never willingly part with his phone. She stated, “He eats, sleeps, showers, breathes his phone.”
The family was deeply concerned by these developments and felt compelled to conduct their own search efforts after experiencing little support from authorities. A GoFundMe campaign was launched by Giovanni’s aunt, Desiree, to raise funds for the family’s search and ongoing needs.
The campaign, which has since exceeded its $15,000 goal and raised over $21,000, articulated the family’s despair and need for assistance. Bridgette shared in the GoFundMe description that Giovanni went missing under troubling circumstances, urging for any contributions to help cover funeral, medical, and legal costs following his death.
As the news of Giovanni’s body being discovered surfaced, it was revealed that a private investigation team hired by the family played a role in locating the body, which had previously been overlooked by official searches.
While the sheriff’s office stated that initial evidence did not indicate foul play, a toxicology report is anticipated, though it is expected to take around six months to finalize. This delay complicates the family’s efforts to find closure and understand what truly transpired during Giovanni’s final hours.
Currently, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, has not officially confirmed the identity of the body found, which leaves the Pelletier family in continued distress as they grapple with loss and uncertainty.
In her statement, Bridgette emphasized her need to find strength amidst the overwhelming heartbreak for her family and her four younger children. She appealed for respect for their privacy during this difficult time, as they grieve the loss of Giovanni.
This heartbreaking case serves as a reminder of the impact of mental health and substance use, as well as the importance of immediate family support in moments of crisis. As the Pelletier family seeks answers, the community has rallied around them, demonstrated by the substantial support garnered through their GoFundMe campaign.
