Hadestown is known for its critically acclaimed narrative and remarkable production, having been the most awarded show of the 2018-2019 Broadway season.

In addition to its eight Tony Awards®, it garnered four Drama Desk Awards and six Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Outstanding New Broadway Musical.

The creation of Hadestown is the work of noted singer-songwriter and Tony Award® winner Anaïs Mitchell, who collaborated with original director and Tony Award® winner Rachel Chavkin to develop this unique theatrical piece.

Remarkably, Hadestown marks only the fourth instance in Broadway history where a woman has been the sole author of a musical, writing both the music and the book.

The show made its Broadway debut at the Walter Kerr Theatre on April 17, 2019, where it quickly attracted large audiences until performances were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It successfully resumed performances on September 2, 2021, becoming one of the first musicals to re-open on Broadway, and continues to entertain audiences to this day.

Originally beginning as Mitchell’s indie theater project that toured in Vermont, Hadestown was transformed into a celebrated album and eventually into the award-winning musical witnessed on stages today.

Through their collaboration, Mitchell and Chavkin have created a production that intertwines modern American folk music with New Orleans-inspired jazz, bringing to life two compelling love stories.

The narrative follows the journeys of Orpheus and Eurydice, as well as Hades and Persephone, inviting audiences to experience a captivating journey to the underworld and back.

With its enchanting melodies and poetic storytelling, Hadestown addresses themes of industry versus nature, doubt versus faith, and ultimately, fear versus love.

The musical is performed by a dynamic ensemble of actors, dancers, and singers, ensuring that each performance delivers an impactful and hopeful theatrical experience.

Since its world premiere at New York Theatre Workshop in 2016, Hadestown has become the longest-running show in the theater’s 40-year history.

The production also enjoyed its Canadian premiere in 2017 at the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton and held a sold-out run at the National Theatre in London in 2018.

Hadestown was developed with the support of the Eli and Edythe Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center, alongside the joining efforts of The Ground Floor at Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

The Grammy® winning Hadestown Original Broadway Cast Recording is currently available at Hadestown.com/music, produced by David Lai, Sickafoose, and Mitchell on Sing It Again Records.
