New Beginnings at J-K’s Greek Cafe: A Fresh Chapter for La Mesa’s Beloved Eatery

La Mesa welcomes back a cherished dining destination as Liza Tsolirides and Brooke Saunders step into the role of restaurant owners at the renovated J-K’s Greek Cafe.

Having originally opened its doors about 40 years ago, J-K’s Greek Cafe gained a loyal following for its authentic Greek dishes like gyros, salads, and more. After the restaurant closed in 2024, many locals and Greek cuisine enthusiasts were curious about the future of this beloved establishment.

In a serendipitous turn of events, Tsolirides and Saunders were in the midst of searching for their first restaurant venture when the opportunity to take over J-K’s arose. With a friendship spanning a decade, the duo had previously worked together at well-known establishments like Cucina Urbana, Snooze A.M. Eatery, and Sisters Pizza.

Tsolirides describes how she stumbled upon the listing online, remarking, “It lit the fuse.” As a Greek, she felt a strong connection to the restaurant and its legacy.

After extensive renovations to the compact 950-square-foot space, the new version of J-K’s Greek Cafe will open its doors on Tuesday, August 19, offering both lunch and dinner.

The decision to retain the original name was made after a discussion with the son of the original owner, who shared that the initials J-K represent his father Jacob and uncle Kostas.

Tsolirides humorously notes, “My son’s name is Jacob, and my brother’s name was Kostas,” explaining that the name holds significant historical value and changing it would signify the establishment of a completely new restaurant.

While some aspects of the restaurant will change—such as improved visibility through the front windows—many classic menu items will remain, including popular dishes like roasted chicken, gyros, moussaka, dolmas (available with meat and vegetarian options), and souvlaki made from pork, chicken, lamb, and beef.

In addition to these traditional offerings, Tsolirides plans to introduce made-from-scratch dips like garlic dip, tzatziki, spicy feta, and beet dips, as well as other unique Greek dishes not often found on typical menus.

One particular detail captured Tsolirides and Saunders’ hearts—the vintage vinyl pink chairs that evoke the charm of a classic ’50s diner. Tsolirides enthusiastically recalls, “From the moment we walked in, we just loved the chairs.” Despite not entirely fitting the restaurant’s aesthetic, their sentimental value led to their preservation.

The atmosphere of the new J-K’s leans towards a taverna reminiscent of a Greek beach rather than the conventional blue and white colors. Given the restaurant’s limited seating for around six tables, Tsolirides anticipates a significant amount of takeout business.

The new J-K’s aims to breathe fresh life into a cherished community hub in a changing neighborhood. As members of the LGBTQ community, Tsolirides and Saunders expressed gratitude for the welcoming response from local residents.

Reflecting on their experience, Tsolirides stated, “Once we were here and had a chance to look around, we thought, ‘Wow, this is a great place to be.’” With the encouragement they received from the neighborhood, the duo committed to being open and authentic in their approach.

J-K’s Greek Cafe is set to re-open at 7749 University Avenue in La Mesa on August 19, operating from Tuesday to Saturday between 11:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.
