Celebrating 125 Years of Fun: The Washington State Fair is Back with Exciting New Features

As summer transitions into fall, Puyallup prepares to welcome crowds for the much-anticipated Washington State Fair, celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.

With the festivities running from August 29 to September 21, visitors can expect a lively atmosphere filled with thrilling rides, delightful food, and engaging activities for all ages.

“We’re so excited to welcome everybody to our biggest party yet,” said Fair spokeswoman Stacy Van Horne, emphasizing the many ways families can save while enjoying the Fair.

This year, the Washington State Fair debuts several new attractions aimed at younger attendees. On the opening night, August 29, the Fair will host its first-ever drone and firework show starting at 10 p.m.

The show features hundreds of drones illuminating the sky with shapes resembling Big Wa, farm animals, and much more. Families can also enjoy fireworks shows every Friday evening throughout the Fair.

Visitors entering through the Gold Gate will notice a fresh look thanks to extensive renovations. The updated entrance features an eye-catching water feature and a new “W” structure.

Additionally, a new free self-guided walking tour app allows attendees to explore at their own pace with six curated tours. One such tour titled “Family Friendly & Free” highlights free and low-cost activities that are sure to entertain children.

For food lovers, the Fair offers a mouthwatering array of options that encourages visitors to indulge without worrying about nutrition.

Among the new vendors this year is Tanghulu, which sells sugar-coated fruit skewers, a popular treat hailing from Chinese street food culture. Children, in particular, will enjoy the elevated eats available at the new 1900 Food Hall & Rooftop Bar, featuring sweet offerings such as carrot cake, elephant ears, and giant ice cream sandwiches.

The Fair introduces an engaging new exhibit titled “Our Food, Our Farms, Our Washington.” This immersive experience explores Washington’s agricultural heritage and innovative farming techniques, making it both fun and educational for all ages.

The Fair Park & Stage has also been transformed into the largest free entertainment venue on the fairgrounds, located where the M barn once stood. This inclusive area will cater to audiences of all ages while offering a 21+ bar.

For younger children, the Farm at SillyVille continues to be a favorite, featuring adorable structures where toddlers and preschoolers can engage in hands-on activities, such as sorting apples and pollinating flowers. This interactive experience rewards kids for completing tasks, ensuring plenty of giggles and learning opportunities.

Moreover, last year’s popular cattle birthing exhibit returns, showcasing expecting mothers and their newborn calves. Fairgoers can learn about animal husbandry and even discover the astonishing price of milk at grocery stores while engaging with knowledgeable staff.

Thrill-seekers will appreciate the Classic Coaster, a wooden rollercoaster that celebrates its 90th anniversary this year. It stands 55 feet tall and stretches a remarkable 2,650 feet long, making it one of the world’s longest-running wooden coasters.

Don’t miss the horse breed showcase taking place from August 29 to September 1, which features a variety of unique horses, including ancient Iranian breeds and war horses reminiscent of the Medieval era—all available for viewing at no charge.

For families looking to enjoy the Fair without overspending, several free admission days provide great opportunities.

On opening day, August 29, the Fair will grant free entry from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to those who donate a non-perishable food item, supporting the Puyallup Food Bank.

The BECU Free Kids Weekend runs from August 29 to September 1, offering free gate admission for attendees aged 18 and under.

Another option for free admission is on September 5 for those who bring a donation for the school supply drive, valid from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Military Appreciation Mondays also offer free gate admission for all active, reserve, and retired military personnel, as well as their dependents and disabled veterans on September 1, 8, and 15.

To maximize fun without breaking the bank, avoid carnival games and take advantage of the myriad free music, shows, and entertainment available throughout the fairgrounds, including live performances, petting zoos, and draft horse demonstrations.

Families can also benefit from the Fair Value Menu program, which features weekday food deals, with select vendors offering $12 meal options that include a standard entrée, side, and/or drink.

Furthermore, fairgoers are welcome to bring their own food and drinks, with the exception of alcohol, allowing for a cost-effective and enjoyable day at the Fair.

With so much to offer, the Washington State Fair promises to be a jubilant celebration of community, tradition, and good old-fashioned fun.
