At a time when negativity and division are prevalent in society, Lake Street Dive has chosen to embrace a message of positivity.
The Brooklyn-based band, known for its eclectic musical style that ranges from pop to soul, folk, and jazz, is set to bring this uplifting vibe to their concert at the Tabernacle on Friday. The show was originally scheduled to take place at the Historic Fourth Ward Skatepark.
Their latest album, ‘Good Together,’ is a reflection of this mindset and marks the quintet’s eighth full-length outing, released last year.
In a recent interview, founding member Rachael Price shared insights into the creative process behind the album. The journey began at a songwriter’s retreat held at the home of drummer and backup vocalist Mike Calabrese in Vermont in 2023.
During this retreat, the band cultivated a concept they referred to as ‘joyful rebellion.’ This notion stemmed from their collective sentiment of not wanting to write sad, angry, or negative songs. Instead, they aimed to explore more joyful themes while ensuring that their music retained depth and authenticity.
Price elaborated on the band’s vision, explaining, “We came up with this general concept that we started calling joyful rebellion.
It came out of … not feeling like we were in the mood to be writing sad songs, negative songs or angry songs and wanting to lean into more joyful subjects, but also not wanting to write a fluffy record either.
We didn’t want to shy away from the things we were feeling. We just wanted to put a lot of positivity into the songs.”
Key tracks such as ‘Help Is on the Way’ and ‘Twenty-Five’ emerged directly from this creative premise.
For instance, the song ‘Good Together’ explores the journey of two individuals who have experienced hardships in past relationships. They grapple with their past behaviors but find solace in each other’s company, ultimately developing healthier habits as a couple.
The band members continued to delve into this theme throughout the album, consistently weaving in messages of positivity and resilience.
With their music resonating during an era marked by challenges, Lake Street Dive’s decision to focus on uplifting narratives is both timely and impactful.
As they prepare to take the stage at the Tabernacle, the group emphasizes their commitment to bringing joy and connection through their sound, offering fans a refreshing escape from the negative tides of everyday life.
Their approach is a testament to the power of music as a vehicle for positivity, enabling listeners to find hope and camaraderie in times of adversity.
The concert on Friday promises to be more than just a performance; it’s an invitation to partake in a collective celebration of ‘joyful rebellion,’ one song at a time.
