Arden Theatre Company to Stage Katori Hall’s ‘The Mountaintop’ This Fall

The Arden Theatre Company is set to present ‘The Mountaintop,’ a poignant and captivating play penned by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Katori Hall.

Directed by the esteemed Brett Ashley Robinson, an award-winning director, the production will run from October 30 through December 14, 2025, on the Arcadia Stage.

This 90-minute reimagining of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s final night offers audiences a unique and intimate portrayal of one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century.

Set on April 3, 1968, the narrative unfolds as Dr. King, portrayed by Akeem Davis, returns to his room at the Lorraine Motel after delivering his famous “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech.

Initially, the atmosphere seems calm, but an unexpected encounter with Camae, a mysterious maid played by Kishia Nixon, quickly changes the dynamic.

As the night progresses, their dialogue unveils the complexities of Dr. King’s character, revealing his humor, doubts, and the immense pressure he feels regarding the legacy he will leave behind.

Director Brett Ashley Robinson acknowledges the power of this story, noting that ‘The Mountaintop’ blends history with magical realism to envision King’s last evening and his reflections on mortality and legacy.

Robinson states, “It is a beautiful story of the private life of one of America’s most public figures, and how he reckons with his own legacy, mortality, and the future of the United States.”

Both heartfelt and humorous, ‘The Mountaintop’ encourages the audience to reflect on how they can honor King’s legacy moving forward.

The production features a powerful two-person cast, with Akeem Davis delivering a compelling performance as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Davis is recognized for his impressive work at Arden Theatre, including roles in ‘August Wilson’s King Hedley II,’ ‘Intimate Apparel,’ and ‘A Doll’s House,’ for which he received a Barrymore Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor.

His regional credits span numerous prestigious theatres such as Philadelphia Theatre Company and Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, adding depth to his performance experience in this significant role.

Kishia Nixon takes on the role of Camae, bringing her talent from previous Arden productions including the world premiere of ‘Holy Grail of Memphis’ and ‘Clyde’s.’

Nixon’s work extends across various regional theatres, enriching her portrayal in this important play.

The production team comprises talented individuals, including Director Brett Ashley Robinson, Assistant Director Gabe Moses, and a skilled design team contributing to scenic, lighting, costume, sound, and projection designs.

‘The Mountaintop’ will begin previews on October 30 and officially opens on November 5, before concluding its run on December 14 on the Arcadia Stage.

Ticket prices vary by performance, starting at $37.

Attendees can purchase tickets through the Arden Theatre Company website, by phone, or at the box office located at 40 N. 2nd Street, Philadelphia, PA.
