SPOILER ALERT: This article contains spoilers for the Season 3 finale of ‘Yellowjackets,’ titled ‘Full Circle,’ now streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime.
In the explosive Season 3 finale of ‘Yellowjackets,’ fans witnessed a pivotal moment for Shauna, played by Melanie Lynskey, as she navigated through a whirlwind of emotions and unexpected revelations.
After a chaotic reunion with her presumed-dead ex, Melissa, leading to Van’s tragic death, Shauna returns home to an empty house, confronting the reality of her family leaving her behind.
In an interview with Variety, Lynskey discussed Shauna’s emotional journey and the significance of her powerful actions in the finale.
Reading the scene where Shauna comes home to an empty house, Lynskey shared her reaction to Shauna’s breaking point.
“It almost felt like a relief to me because she’s been repressing. To have been playing for almost three full seasons somebody who’s trying to repress the most powerful part of themselves, it felt exciting and like a relief,” she expressed.
Shauna’s struggles with holding her life together are apparent,
and Lynskey elaborated, “I think she’s really developed a persona that is keeping her safe and keeping people around her safe. She’s worked very hard on not being noticed.”
As the finale unfolds, viewers witness a profound transformation in Shauna; upon realizing her family has left, she quickly moves into a self-reflective state, finding solace in the quiet of her home.
“It’s so quiet now in this house that I can hear myself think, and this is what I’m thinking,” Lynskey described, emphasizing the exhilaration Shauna feels in this newfound solitude.
The emotional weight of the season culminates when she finally reads Melissa’s heartfelt letter.
Lynskey asserts that if Shauna had read the letter sooner, it could have drastically altered her reactions and decisions, saying, “Absolutely! She cries reading that letter. Part of her crying is kind of like, she can’t believe that she did it again.”
The surprising deaths of significant characters like Van and Lottie also weighed heavily on Lynskey,
as she recounted her emotions upon learning about their departures. “It was hard. It was not what anyone expected. I didn’t think they would be gone so quickly,” she shared, emphasizing her close relationships with the actors behind the characters.
Lynskey addressed the dynamics between Shauna, Tai, and Misty, suggesting that Shauna’s actions could create intense conflict moving forward.
“Is this the beginning of Misty and Tai versus Shauna? Is Shauna the ‘big bad’ of Season 4?” she questioned, revealing her uncertainty about Shauna’s position in upcoming seasons.
Lynskey believes that Shauna is not inherently a villain but rather a complex character driven by her trauma and experiences.
“I don’t think I can play this person and think she’s a villain. I’m playing a person who rationalizes everything, even when it’s very difficult to do that,” she remarked, reinforcing the theme of moral ambiguity that runs throughout the series.
As the finale wrapped up, she expressed excitement about the potential for further exploration of Shauna’s character in future seasons.
“I hope so, because I want to continue to have scenes with those actors. I think Jeff trying to have a conversation with completely unleashed Shauna would be really interesting,” Lynskey stated, implying that the narrative could delve into the complexities of Shauna’s relationships.
Finally, Lynskey reflected on how her interpretation of Shauna has evolved over the course of the series.
“We both felt like Shauna was wearing a costume when the show began. She was very aware of her own power in every way. She was not a wallflower. She was not a shy person, but it was easier for her to present as that because she was actually quite scared of allowing herself to embrace her full power,” she explained.
As fans eagerly await the potential future of ‘Yellowjackets,’ Lynskey’s insights into Shauna’s psyche offer a compelling glimpse into the intricate narrative that continues to unfold, marking ‘Yellowjackets’ as a psychologically rich and intense exploration of trauma, identity, and survival.
