KTNV — Before you head out the door and get your day started, we want to remind you that today is the deadline to file your tax returns.
The IRS has ways to file an extension, so here’s what you need to know.
In addition to the tax deadline, Clark County commissioners are set to introduce a new ordinance aimed at making the roads safer for electric bikes and e-scooters.
With electric bikes and e-scooters becoming increasingly popular across the valley, a proposed ordinance will classify and regulate these forms of transportation.
Under the terms of the proposed ordinance, minors will be required to wear a helmet while operating an e-bike or e-scooter in specific county-owned areas.
Moreover, the ordinance aims to hold individuals accountable who drive recklessly or perform dangerous maneuvers while on these vehicles.
A set speed limit of 15 mph will be established for riders using roadways, sidewalks, or lanes designated for bikes, e-bikes, or e-scooters.
The first offense for violating these proposed rules would result in a $150 fine, with penalties that could escalate up to $600 for repeated offenses.
This legislative effort comes in response to an uptick in crashes involving e-bikes and e-scooters reported by Las Vegas Metro police this year.
Today, commissioners will only introduce this ordinance, and there will be an opportunity for public discussion and comment in the weeks to follow.
In related news, Jhovani Carrillo previously spoke with public officials regarding the rationale behind the new ordinance aimed at stopping reckless electric bike and scooter activity.
As a reminder, today is also tax deadline day.
If you need more time to file your 2024 tax return, the Internal Revenue Service offers options, though utilizing those options could incur costs.
The IRS states that filers can seek an extension that grants them until Oct. 15 to file their returns.
Extensions must be requested by the tax deadline day, which is April 15.
In another important legislative update, Nevada lawmakers have revived ‘Reba’s Law,’ a bill intended to increase penalties for animal cruelty in the state.
This development occurs after the Friday deadline for numerous bills under consideration for this legislative session, with Assembly Bill 381 initially not advancing and seemingly dead.
However, on Monday, a waiver was granted for Reba’s Law, allowing state lawmakers to amend the bill and proceed with it through the Assembly Judiciary Committee.
Lawmakers are currently working on amendments to further strengthen the bill, which will subsequently head to the full assembly for a vote.
If it passes, it will also require Senate approval before it can become law.
