Long Beach State Battles Past Hawaii in Overtime Thriller

HONOLULU – Long Beach State shot 50.0% from the field in overtime en route to a 73-69 overtime victory at Hawaii on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The physical and competitive contest saw 41 fouls, 15 lead changes, and 10 ties as the Beach got several clutch plays from Savannah Tucker and JaQuoia Jones-Brown to help propel LBSU (5-3, 2-0 Big West) past the Rainbow Wahine (5-3, 0-1 Big West).

The Beach were led offensively by Tucker who finished the game with 23 points marking her sixth career 20-plus point contest.

Tucker connected on 5-of-11 field goals, 2-of-3 triples, and made 11-of-12 free throws in 45 minutes of action.

She also added three rebounds, three assists, one steal, and one block.

Joining Tucker in double-digits was senior guard Patricia Chung who scored all 12 of her points on three-pointers as she went 4-for-8 from long distance.

Chung contributed seven boards, five assists, and two steals in solid outing.

Jones-Brown and Jada Crawshaw rounded out LBSU’s double-figure scorers with 10 points each.

Jones-Brown scored all her points in the final 15 minutes of action as she tallied four in the fourth quarter and six in overtime.

She also pulled down seven rebounds, while Crawshaw chipped in five boards.

Rachel Loobie led the Beach with 12 rebounds while registering eight points, one assist, one steal, and one block on the night.

Long Beach State opened the game hot from three-point range.

In the opening 10 minutes of action, the Beach sunk four field goals, all of which came from behind the arc as LBSU shot 66.7% (4-6) from long distance.

The Beach got back-to-back threes from Chung to take a 10-6 lead over Hawaii at 5:51.

However, the Bows would string together six-straight points to turn a four-point deficit into a two-point lead (12-10) with 3:38 on the clock.

Long Beach closed the frame on a 6-0 run to take an 18-14 lead into the second quarter.

The Rainbow Wahine used a 5-0 run to take a 26-25 edge over the Beach with 3:40 remaining in the first half.

After another triple from Chung at 3:11, Long Beach State regained the lead 28-26.

The Beach held the two-point advantage until the final 40 seconds of action, when Hawaii evened the score at 28-all at halftime.

Hawaii opened the second half with five-straight points to take a quick 33-28 lead over Long Beach.

The Bows led by six several times in the third quarter.

However, the Beach stayed within striking distance, trailing by just two (40-38) at the media timeout at 3:58.

Long Beach State went on its longest scoring run (7-0) of the game on their way to taking a three-point lead (45-42) at the 2:20 mark.

The back-and-forth contest saw a few more ties, before Crawshaw’s driving layup with 1:01 left give Long Beach State a 49-47 advantage over Hawaii at the end of the third quarter.

The conference foes continued to battle it out in the fourth quarter.

Trailing 61-58 with just 14.1 seconds remaining in regulation, Long Beach State pulled within one (61-60) thanks to a layup from Jones-Brown.

The product out of Atlanta, Ga., came in clutch once again and she tied the game with a turnaround jumper with just 3.0 seconds on the clock to force overtime.

Jones-Brown continued making key buckets as she put the Beach on top of the Bows, 64-63, with 3:25 on the clock in overtime.

After Hawaii countered and regained the lead (66-64), Tucker drew a foul with 1:55 to go and sunk both free throws to tie the game (66-66).

A trey from Chung at the one-minute mark gave LBSU a one-point edge (69-68).

The Beach would lead the rest of the way as Tucker extended the Beach’s lead to three (71-68) with a pair of made free throws with just 24.6 left in overtime.

Hawaii managed to make it a two-point game, but Tucker once again gave the Beach some insurance points as she made another two from the charity stripe to seal the game, 73-69.

Long Beach State is now 33-21 in overtime contests all-time.

With the win over Hawaii, Long Beach State evens its overtime record with the Bows, 2-2.

The win over Hawaii marked the first time in program history that LBSU defeated Hawaii in overtime on the road.

Lily Wahinekapu led the Bows with 20 points, while Ritorya Tamilo just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Tamilo also put up half a dozen blocks in the game.

The Beach will be back in action at the Walter Pyramid on Saturday, Dec. 14 against No. 1 UCLA.

Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
