On April 15, 2025, San Francisco celebrates its 175th birthday, coinciding with the local phenomenon of 415 Day.
In recognition of this milestone, Illuminate, the nonprofit arts organization renowned for awe-inspiring public art, has planned an unforgettable event featuring the debut of the AweMobile.
This custom-engineered Sprinter van is equipped with an innovative battery-powered array of nine Laser Space Cannons that will electrify the city skyline.
As darkness falls starting at around 7:45 p.m., the AweMobile will cast a vibrant line of colored light from UN Plaza, extending all the way to the iconic dome of City Hall.
The one-night-only light exhibition promises to turn the city into a canvas of illumination and is set to last into the late hours of the night, depending on battery life.
The 175th Birthday Laser Space Cannon Light Show will take place at UN Plaza, located at 355 McAllister St. (at Fulton), San Francisco.
This event is free and open to the public, encouraging everyone to experience the spectacle of light.
Attendees can gather at UN Plaza just outside the skate park’s white fence, where beams of colored light will cascade across UN Plaza, Fulton Plaza, and Civic Center Plaza, culminating with a stunning display on the dome of City Hall.
This will mark the first instance where lasers have been permitted to interact with this historic landmark, creating a unique fusion of art and architecture.
In addition to the light show, the celebrations for 415 Day will feature various events happening downtown.
Funcheap, a co-owner of The Function, a comedy club and cocktail bar located a block away at 1414 Market St. at Polk, will host a special 415 Day San Francisco Birthday Comedy Festival.
The festival includes two free comedy shows at 7 p.m. and 8:45 p.m., which would normally cost $20, but attendees can RSVP on Eventbrite for complimentary tickets.
People are encouraged to join the comedy festival before or after experiencing the awe of the light show.
Additional activities for 415 Day include a job fair, scavenger hunt, and night market, allowing locals to engage in a variety of ways.
The installation not only serves as a remarkable artistic display but also symbolizes the declaration of San Francisco as the
