The Atlanta Hawks faced off against the Miami Heat in an intense game that showcased not only the team’s tenacity but also the vibrant spirit of Atlanta, highlighted during a special halftime performance by Shamea Morton, a native of the city and the in-arena host.
Morton reflected on her lifelong connection to the Hawks, expressing excitement about performing her single ‘Neva Had’ as a full-circle moment in her journey from cheerleader and dancer to in-arena host.
“I grew up in Atlanta. I was grown here, not flown here, so I’m true to Atlanta. This is my city. This is my home, and these are my best friends out there,” Morton shared.
The Hawks have garnered admiration from not only their fans but also from celebrities like rapper T.I., who noted the team’s remarkable ability to mount comebacks.
“(The Hawks) ability to stay in the game when they’re down by double digits and come back for the W is impressive,” T.I. shared, emphasizing the resilient mindset the team has displayed throughout the season.
During the game, the Hawks found themselves trailing the Heat by as many as 17 points. However, they came out strong in the second half, cutting the deficit to three points thanks to crucial three-pointers from Terance Mann and Trae Young.
Dyson Daniels then tied the score at 88-88, before Young hit a three-pointer from near midcourt, putting the Hawks ahead 91-88 with just over seven minutes remaining.
In a fun twist, the Hawks incorporated a segment where players had to guess if lyrics were from an artificial intelligence program or from one of T.I.’s hits, including “What You Know”. They highlighted the three-time Grammy Award winner in the crowd after sharing the lyrics.
The game also attracted NFL stars like Bijan Robinson and Preston Smith, who were eager to support the Hawks in their playoff pursuit.
“It’s awesome for the city,” Robinson said, highlighting the fans’ wishes for the team to advance in the playoffs.
Smith, a Stone Mountain native and Hawks fan with a tattoo of the team, expressed admiration for the players’ drive.
“It’s great because these are the games where you see the guys lay it all on the line,” Smith said. “Just the resiliency and the fight that they put in for a playoff opportunity is commendable.”
The Hawks not only fought back from a 17-point deficit but also overcame two 12-point deficits, taking a 91-88 lead before the Heat regained control.
Despite their efforts, the Hawks’ season was on the line as they fought hard and forced the game into overtime after Young scored a driving layup to tie things at 106-106 at the end of regulation.
Ultimately, however, the intense comebacks took a toll on the Hawks, and they fell short of their playoff aspirations.
Coach Quin Snyder expressed gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support throughout the season.
“It was good to be at home,” Snyder said. “Especially tonight, our fans gave us a lift when we started the game. We found more energy and more juice.”
As the Hawks’ season came to a close, the team reflected on the incredible moments shared with their fans, emphasizing a sense of appreciation for the city of Atlanta that has been their home and stage.
