Vicky Pink Celebrates 60 Years with a Photographic Tribute to Black Houston

Renowned Houston photographer Vicky Pink recently celebrated her 60th birthday, treating family, friends, and colleagues to a sneak peek of her extensive photographic portfolio.

The event, titled “Through Vicky’s Lens – Making the Cut: A Photographic Journey,” honored Pink’s remarkable two-decade career in photojournalism, showcasing her work that captures nearly every significant achievement and gathering within the Houston Black community.

Known for her unparalleled ability to document Houston’s Black history, Pink’s portfolio includes images from mayoral inaugurations, congressional meetings, and organization galas, effectively preserving the narratives of these events and the individuals involved.

Pink’s passion for photography stems from her mother, Marie Heileman, who often captured family moments in photo albums, instilling in her daughter a love for documenting life’s milestones.

The recent showcase, held at the Kay Davis Showroom located at 4237 Davenport, featured an array of Pink’s award-winning photographs alongside her videography work, alongside numerous copies of International Focus Magazine (IF), which she co-founded.

Attendees included her 90-year-old father, Henry Heileman, along with family members and key figures from Pink’s career, such as her best friend Dr. Ellene Polidore, who reminisced about their shared educational experiences in photography at Kashmere High School.

Polidore praised Pink’s expertise, stating, “[Vicky] is my go-to person for photography because she knows how to capture what you want in the moment and I just love her for that.”

Throughout her career, Pink has built strong relationships with her subjects, often capturing their familial milestones as they grow over the years.

Her unique approach not only highlights the events themselves but also the personal stories behind them, creating a legacy through her lens.

Pink’s photography has been featured in nearly every Black-owned media publication in Greater Houston, showcasing her as a trusted photographer among the city’s prominent figures.

Her reputation is such that she has been invited to accompany Houston’s political leaders, including the late U.S. Representatives Sheila Jackson Lee and Sylvester Turner, on numerous trips to Washington, D.C., to cover the Congressional Black Caucus.

Her vast experience even includes international assignments in places like Cuba, Canada, and covering significant events such as the Myles Munroe funeral in the Bahamas.

In addition to her work with IF, Pink runs her own business, VP Productions, which offers a range of services, including photography, video production, portrait sessions, and event coverage.

As she moves forward, Pink looks forward to presenting a more comprehensive exhibit that will honor the Black experiences and stories she has so passionately documented over the years.

“Being a photographer, you not only are photographing events, but a lot of times they’ll use you over and over,” Pink reflected.

“Over the period of years, you get to know that family. You get to know their kids. You get to see them when they’re little and then when they grow up.”

This commitment to capturing moments and memories is what defines Pink’s extraordinary career and her lasting impact on the Houston community.
