Documentary Highlights Sacrifices of LA Firefighters Amid Ongoing Contract Negotiations

A new documentary has been released, presenting an intimate perspective on the sacrifices made by firefighters and first responders during the recent wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles in January.

Titled “Resilience,” the documentary features never-before-seen footage and personal interviews from those on the front lines during the crisis.

This week, Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Dave Gilottee, along with other union leaders, gathered in Altadena to discuss the urgent need for recognition from county officials amid ongoing contract negotiations.

Gilottee, the president of the LA County Firefighters Local 1014 union, emphasized the severe toll the wildfires have taken on first responders, including his own health.

“I had to go to the doctor for the third time in my career, get steroids for my lungs, get antibiotics and breathing treatment to be able to continue working after the impact of the fires, particularly Lake Hughes, on my own body,” he shared.

The gathering occurred close to the remnants of the Eaton Fire, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by those involved.

“We’re not just talking about uncomfortable conditions; we’re addressing hazardous issues caused by the fires,” Gilottee said.

He pointed out that the ramifications of the wildfires extend far beyond extinguishing the flames.

“The fires are extinguished, but the health consequences will linger long after the fire — much like the impact of 9/11,” he noted.

Richard Pippin, president of the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs, also voiced his concerns regarding the current state of contract negotiations.

As the unions continue to struggle for a new contract following its expiration in January, disagreements about cost of living raises and staffing levels remain unresolved.

“It’s beyond disturbing to see our elected officials, in the immediate wake of this kind of tragedy, telling us that they don’t think they can afford to invest in public safety,” he said.

Pippin urged county leaders to recognize the essential importance of investing in public safety, particularly after the devastation experienced during the wildfires.

“I think the time has come for them to take away from this terrible disaster the message that we truly can’t afford not to invest in our public safety,” he added.

Both leaders expressed the heavy emotional toll that witnessing the devastation has taken on them.

“Driving back up here today and watching the video ourselves, it’s hard not to get brought back into it,” Gilottee remarked regarding the documentary.

Union leaders are advocating for public support by encouraging community members to contact their elected officials and push for favorable contract discussions.

The documentary “Resilience” is now available on YouTube, illustrating the grueling conditions faced by firefighters battling multiple wildfires simultaneously in January.

With a compelling narrative and powerful visuals, the documentary aims to highlight the dedication and sacrifices of first responders in the fight against devastating wildfires.
