San Francisco State University Launches Affordable Housing Project for Students

San Francisco State University has marked a significant milestone with the completion of its West Grove Commons project, which provides affordable housing for more than 700 students.

This initiative represents a groundbreaking effort through California’s Higher Education Student Housing Grant program, specifically designed to address the escalating housing crisis affecting college students in the state.

The West Grove Commons is strategically located on the west side of the university’s campus and features not only student accommodations but also a health center and dining hall.

California’s funding contributed approximately 65% of the project’s total cost of $170 million, a substantial investment considering that state support for student housing has historically been limited.

Lynn Mahoney, the university’s president, emphasized the importance of this development, calling it a “historic first step” necessary for maintaining affordable public higher education in California.

The demand for student housing in the California State University system remains high, as nearly 4,000 individuals were on waiting lists last year.

According to a 2020 UCLA report, 10% of CSU students face homelessness, underscoring the urgent need for affordable housing solutions.

In response to this crisis, California lawmakers introduced a bill in 2021 establishing grants to fund affordable housing for college students.

In addition to the new beds available at San Francisco State, nearly 3,000 additional accommodations are being added across the California State University system, as highlighted in a recent 2024 report.

At the state’s community colleges, efforts to provide affordable housing are also in progress, with plans to make 5,000 beds available for low-income students in the coming years.

One of the key features of the West Grove Commons is its reduced-rate housing option, allowing students to pay 25% less than traditional campus housing rates, easing the financial burden typically associated with college living.

Rylissa Aquino Javier, a senior and resident assistant at the new dorm, shared her personal journey of commuting nearly two hours from Fairfield due to high living costs four years ago when she began her studies at San Francisco State.

“Even on campus, the housing is just really expensive, and we do have to take out a good amount of loans to be able to afford to live here,” she said.

Javier noted that finding affordable housing as a college student in the area is rare, making the West Grove Commons a welcome addition.

Reflecting on her experience in the new living space, she highlighted the welcoming atmosphere and the communal areas fostered social interactions among residents.

“We have a big living room downstairs with a communal kitchen, and I’ve seen a lot of residents cooking with each other, cooking for each other,” she recounted.

The design of the West Grove Commons emphasizes student well-being.

Lynne Riesselman, principal architect with EHDD Architecture, explained that the integration of a health center into the dorm was a response to the increased awareness of physical and mental health needs, especially in the wake of the pandemic.

“Combining those pieces into a prominent building where students are used to coming on a day-to-day basis elevates those services and increases student comfort with using them,” she said.

Remarkably, the project was completed in just 25 months after the state provided the grant, a much shorter timeframe compared to the typical four years for housing projects in California.

Riesselman attributed this swift completion to the state’s desire to expedite funding allocation and the preparedness of the university’s capital planning team, the architects, and the construction company.

“Everybody rode in the same direction as fast as they could,” she stated, highlighting the collaborative effort to bring this vital project to fruition.
