San Diego’s dining scene continues to flourish with exciting new restaurant openings across the region.
Bianchi Pizza & Pasta, an Italian eatery led by Palermo-born chef Ignazio Tagliavia, has debuted at the Bahia Resort Hotel on Mission Bay. Opened on Friday afternoon, Bianchi offers a Neapolitan-inspired menu featuring wood-fired pizzas, homemade pastas, and enticing desserts like tableside tiramisu and house panna cotta.
Also on the drink menu are Italian-inspired cocktails and aperitivo, complementing the restaurant’s elegant ambiance, which includes a 12-seat marble bar and a 45-seat patio. Bianchi operates daily from 5 p.m. to midnight at 988 W. Mission Bay Drive, providing a scenic dining experience for locals and visitors alike.
In Oceanside, Odie’s Pizza Co. is set to open next week in downtown, specializing in unique sourdough crust pizzas. Known for their innovative approach, Odie’s serves 14- and 16-inch New York and Sicilian-style pies made with dough carefully fermented for 48 hours.
Owner Odie O’Connor, who started his first pizzeria in Portland, Ore., in 2020, brings 10 artisan-style pizzas to the menu, along with wings, salads, and house-made ice cream sandwiches. Odie’s also features their own brew, Odie’s IPA. Customers can enjoy this new culinary spot from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily at 121 N. Cleveland St., Oceanside.
The culinary landscape in Imperial Beach is also expanding with the opening of two restaurants from Sammy Ladeki’s La Jolla-based restaurant group at the newly established Pier South Resort. Roppongi Asian Bistro and Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza are set to welcome guests, reviving the much-loved Roppongi brand that was a staple in La Jolla from 1998 until its closure in 2015.
This new location marks Roppongi’s second opening of the year, alongside the existing La Jolla site. The adjacent Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza, which has multiple locations across California and Nevada, aims to provide a diverse dining option for guests at the hotel, taking the place of Toasted Gastrobrunch.
Furthermore, The Stand, a fast-casual American restaurant chain known for its classic menu, has launched its second San Diego County location in Santee. Opening its doors on May 15, The Stand serves an assortment of burgers, hot dogs, wraps, sandwiches, salads, and more, along with an extensive selection of beers and wines on tap.
Located at 9355 Mission Gorge Road, Suite 121, Santee, the restaurant is set to charm customers with its classic American fare in a casual setting.
As the summer approaches, health-conscious diners in Del Mar can look forward to Jan’s Health Bar opening its eighth location at One Paseo Shopping Center. Scheduled to debut in early June, this fast-casual restaurant will serve a menu filled with nutritious options including smoothies, sandwiches, spring rolls, and salads. Patrons can visit the new location at 3727 Paseo Place, Suite 1440, San Diego.
In addition to new dining options, the San Diego culinary community is excitedly rallying around chef Tara Monsod, a finalist for the James Beard Awards in 2024 and 2025. Puffer Malarkey Collective will showcase a special countdown menu at Le Coq restaurant in La Jolla, where Monsod will personally serve an a la carte selection every Thursday night leading up to the awards on June 16 in Chicago.
Her creative offerings will feature fresh ingredients sourced from local markets, with preparations highlighting dishes like Hokkaido Scallop and cured mackerel.
Finally, San Diego’s An’s Gelato is once again making waves as a contender in USA Today’s annual ice cream poll, having previously been recognized as the No. 1 ice cream in America. The renowned gelato shop is encouraged by its recent second-place finish last year and looks to garner more support from the public before voting ends on June 9.
