Portland-Area Outdoor Pools Set to Open for Summer Swimming

As the temperature rises and summer in Portland approaches, families and individuals are eagerly anticipating the opening of outdoor swimming pools. Here’s a comprehensive overview of when you can dive into the refreshing waters around the Portland area.

The Mt. Hood Community College pool in Gresham is already open and ready for lap swimmers. This 50-meter outdoor pool caters to exercise enthusiasts, offering lap swim hours from Monday to Saturday. Depending on the schedule, swimmers can access either long-course (50 meters) or short-course (25 meters) lanes. Mt. Hood Community College students and staff can enter for free, while adults can buy a daily pass for $7 or utilize a punch card for multiple visits. The aquatic center is located at 3545 N.E. 17th St. in Gresham.

If you’re looking to enjoy pool time in the Beaverton area, the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District will officially open its two outdoor pools on June 16. Currently, the two splash pads in the area are already operational. The Raleigh Swim Center, located at 3500 S.W. 78th Ave. in Portland, will offer both lap swim and open swim opportunities from Monday to Saturday. Meanwhile, the Somerset West Swim Center at 18300 N.W. Park View Blvd in Portland will provide similar services during weekdays. The entry prices for these facilities vary based on age and residency within the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District.

In Hillsboro, the Shute Park Pool will open on June 16, just after the local school district’s academic year concludes. Although the daily schedule has yet to be announced, it can be accessed online once available. Located at 953 SE Maple Street, a daily pass costs $5 for youth and $6 for adults, with slightly higher fees applied to non-residents. Hillsboro also offers five spraygrounds and other water play areas, which opened earlier on May 24.

Portland city pools are scheduled to welcome swimmers starting June 20. Managed by Portland Parks & Recreation, seven outdoor pools will be at the public’s service. Each pool operates on its own unique schedule. The facilities include the Creston Outdoor Pool, Grant Outdoor Pool, Ida B. Wells-Barnett Outdoor Pool, Montavilla Outdoor Pool, Peninsula Outdoor Pool, Sellwood Outdoor Pool, and the Pier Outdoor Pool. Note that Pier Pool, currently under construction, will not open until July 14.

The Creston, Peninsula, and Pier pools will remain accessible until September 5, while the other pools will close on August 22. Admission generally ranges from $4 for youth to $5 for adults, with the option for Portland residents to apply for reduced prices through the city’s access discount program.

For families situated in Oregon City, don’t miss the outdoor wading pool at the swim facility, which opens on June 23. Located at 1211 Jackson St., this wading pool will be available from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, weather permitting. Admission fees vary, with Oregon City residents paying $4.50 for children, $5.50 for adults, and $10 for families, while non-residents will incur slightly higher costs.

With all these wonderful swimming options on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to gather your swimsuits and sunscreen and prepare to make a splash this summer!
