Residents Demand Safe Detour as Hudson River Greenway Closure Persists

The Hudson River Greenway has been closed for an extended period between Dyckman and 181st streets in upper Manhattan, much to the frustration of local residents and cyclists who are calling on the Parks Department for a safe detour.

The closure began with the appearance of a sinkhole in late April, a recurring issue for this stretch which has already faced similar shutdowns three times in the past two years.

Initially, the Parks Department promised repairs would be completed by spring, but the timeline has since shifted, with the reopening now anticipated by late June.

The department plans to complete overall construction aimed at addressing various sinkholes and structural concerns by early July.

In the meantime, the extensive closure has forced cyclists to divert onto Broadway, a route lacking any protected cycling infrastructure, heightening safety concerns among users.

Dave Thom, a principal organizer of the Inwood Owners Coalition, expressed his discontent with the detour, emphasizing that it does not serve its intended purpose.

“That’s not a detour, it goes to a different place, up a whole bunch of hills, it’s a different route,” he stated.

In March, the Parks Department initiated a 12-month Capital Project Scoping Development study to explore long-term solutions to prevent future sinkholes.

A Parks representative confirmed that investigations will take place during the summer, with community engagement expected to kick off in the following months.

However, advocates and users of the greenway are pushing for an immediate safe alternative.

Thom and his coalition suggested converting a lane of the nearby Henry Hudson Parkway into a two-way protected bike lane, but the proposal was rejected by the department.

Despite this setback, Thom remains hopeful the adjustments will be reconsidered, especially if further structural repairs on the greenway are required.

“There’s an alternative ready to be implemented that would solve many of these problems,” he remarked.

Another potential solution discussed is the creation of the
