Goodman Theatre’s Vibrant Summer Programming Offers Diverse Experiences for All

This summer, Goodman Theatre is showcasing an extensive array of experiences designed to cater to all audiences.

From a delightful outdoor circus spectacle to hilarious comedic improvisation, and even new play readings from resident artists, there’s truly something for everyone this July and August.

Sixty teenagers, aged 14-17, will also join the Goodman for two month-long youth summer programs: Playbuild Youth Intensive and Musical Theatre Intensive.

These youthful initiatives align perfectly with the current season’s offerings, notably the summer musical The Color Purple, directed by Lili-Anne Brown, running from June 21 to July 27.

Meanwhile, The Magic Parlour, featuring celebrated third-generation magician Dennis Watkins, will continue its run weekly at Petterino’s, located at 50 W. Randolph on Thursdays through Sundays.

Jared Bellot, the Director of Education and Engagement, expressed his enthusiasm about the energy brought into the Goodman by the young artists involved in summer programs.

He stated, “It’s a thrill to watch our building come alive with the energy of young artists eager to create, explore and grow.”

Bellot emphasized the significance of these creative experiences, saying, “I see the same catalyst: a moment of connection through a shared creative experience that makes us feel just a bit more alive and a bit more connected to our community.”

**Summer Offerings Overview:**

One of the special events this summer is **BOOK UP!**, presented as part of the Chicago Park District’s Night Out in the Parks Series.

This free outdoor performance runs from July 23 to August 10 in twelve parks across Chicago.

Co-directed by Tor Campbell and Raquel Torre, the show stars traveling librarian Jean Claudio, who rolls into town with a magical book cart, ready to ignite imaginations.

The performance combines elements of juggling, tumbling, clowning, and aerial acrobatics, engaging children ages 0 to 5 and their adult companions.

After each performance, there will be a hands-on workshop for attendees to participate in and explore further.

Tickets are not required, though registration is recommended in case of inclement weather.

For more information, visit GoodmanTheatre.org/BookUp.

The Goodman Theatre extends its gratitude to Kirkland & Ellis, acting as the Arts and Community Sponsor for Theater for the Very Young programming.

**TJ and Dave Performance:**

Fans of improvisational comedy can look forward to the return of **TJ and Dave** to the Owen Theatre from July 24 to 26, featuring special musical guest Ike Reilly.

Following a sold-out performance during last summer, renowned improvisers TJ Jagodowski and David Pasquesi will grace the stage once more.

Known as two of the finest practitioners of long-form improv, they perform without a script, characters, or plot.

After an hour of improvisation, audiences leave with laughter-filled memories.

Critics have hailed them as “second city-seasoned masters of long form improv” and “improv virtuosos,” making this a must-see event.

Ticket prices range from $28 to $53, available at GoodmanTheatre.org/TJandDave.

**Sweetest Season:**

The theater will also host the **4th Annual Gathering of Indigenous Creativity**, known as **Sweetest Season**, in partnership with the Gichigamiin Indigenous Nations Museum on August 1 and 2.

Attendees of this unique festival can expect performances and workshops celebrating the artistry of Two Spirit artists and community members, including a vibrant drag show in the Owen Theatre.

The festival will culminate in workshops, panels, poetry, live music, and local artisan vendors.

Community engagement is a key aspect of this event, and all are welcome to participate and celebrate.

Tickets, as well as reservations for free offerings on August 2, will become available by mid-June.

**New Stages Residency Readings:**

From August 8 to 10, an exciting opportunity to witness the future of theater will be available with **NEW STAGES RESIDENCY READINGS**.

This event will feature staged readings of works-in-progress from this season’s New Stages Residents, including `Fruition` by Satya Jnani Chávez & Krystal Ortiz, `Nightbirds` by Xander Browne, NJ Draine & Terry Guest, and `The Maids` by Omer Abbas Salem.

The readings are free, with reservations opening in July, offering community members a chance to experience the development of new plays.

**Youth Intensive Programs:**

The Goodman will also host its long-running summer youth programs this year, inviting young talent to participate in the **PlayBuild** and **Musical Theater Intensive**.

The **PlayBuild** program runs from June 23 to July 21, immersing participants in the fundamentals of live storytelling and performance, honing their skills in acting, writing, improvisation, and making original productions.

On the other hand, the **Musical Theater Intensive** program, from July 14 to August 11, provides pre-professional training in singing, acting, and dancing for aspiring performers.

Both programs are offered free of charge, with engaged professionals guiding the youth.

**Production of The Color Purple:**

Additionally, the highly anticipated summer musical **The Color Purple**, a stage adaptation of Alice Walker’s celebrated novel, is making waves at Goodman Theatre.

Directed by Lili-Anne Brown, this production will invite audiences to witness a powerful narrative of personal awakening and resilience.

Running from June 21 to July 27, the show promises a celebratory ambiance filled with gospel hymns and emotional storytelling.

Ticket prices range from $33 to $143, with the opening night expected on June 30.

Tickets can be obtained via GoodmanTheatre.org/Purple or by calling 312.443.3800.

**Magic Parlour Experience:**

Also ongoing is **Dennis Watkins’ The Magic Parlour**, located at 50 W. Randolph, which collaborates with Goodman Theatre and Petterino’s.

This enchanting magic show takes place every Thursday through Sunday, with tickets on sale through the end of the year.

For $93, patrons receive a 90-minute performance along with a complimentary drink, while a higher ticket price of $133 includes a VIP experience.
