Eric France Launches Congressional Campaign in Illinois’ 2nd District

Eric France officially launched his campaign for the Illinois’ 2nd Congressional District this past Saturday in a cozy restaurant along the Little Calumet River.

A businessman and South Side native, France aims to succeed U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, who is vacating the seat after seven terms to pursue an opportunity in the U.S. Senate.

During his campaign kickoff, France, who leads The France Group consulting firm founded by his late father, Erwin France, emphasized his unique qualifications.

“I know it sounds cliché, but I’m not a career politician,” France stated.

He highlighted his experience in both the public and private sectors over the years, supporting various candidates and working within different administrations as a consultant.

As one of six contenders for the seat, France faces a diverse field.

Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller is currently forming an exploratory committee, while State Sen. Robert Peters, policy expert Adal Regis, and Matteson Village Clerk Yumeka Brown have confirmed their campaigns.

Additionally, Matteson Mayor Sheila Chalmers-Currin has taken preliminary steps toward entering the race.

Support for candidates is already materializing.

Peters secured the endorsement of the Amalgamated Transit Union, while Regis recently received backing from CNN political analyst Van Jones, as well as local leaders like Richton Park Village Trustee Alan Banks and Mickensy Ellis-White, the former head of the Vermillion County Democrats.

The upcoming race is particularly significant as it will take place in a district that has been redrawn following the 2020 census.

This new map, which stretches across eight counties—Cook, Kankakee, Vermillion, Will, Livingston, Iroquois, Champaign, and Ford—aims to ensure no single demographic holds a majority.

Political science professor William F. Hall, who attended France’s kickoff event, noted that the district is one of the most expansive in the country, covering a remarkable 3,936 square miles.

He pointed out that the area has untapped economic potential in sectors like rail, shipping, and trade, suggesting that focused development could benefit not only Illinois but residents in neighboring states like Indiana and Michigan as well.

At the campaign launch, France articulated his platform priorities, which include economic growth, affordable housing, education, and healthcare.

He also referenced his professional background, emphasizing his advocacy for minority purchasing programs and housing initiatives throughout his career.

Although this marks his first run for political office, France’s connection to politics runs deep.

His father, Dr. Erwin France, was a notable figure in Chicago politics, having advised several mayors since the 1960s.

“He certainly would be an ideal candidate from the demographic background,” Hall remarked regarding France’s political upbringing.

France framed his campaign as a grassroots movement focused on equity, dignity, and hope.

“I’m running for Congress because I believe the people of the 2nd Congressional District deserve bold, compassionate, and accountable leadership,” he declared.

He has witnessed the consequences when communities are neglected: underfunded schools, job losses, and unfulfilled promises.

However, he expressed admiration for the resilience of the people in his district, recalling the perseverance of single mothers he has encountered.

In a district encompassing urban, suburban, and rural areas, candidates will need to address diverse community needs—from the South Shore to Champaign County.

France proclaimed his readiness for this challenge.

“This must be a district where not only can everyone survive, but everyone can thrive,” he asserted, emphasizing the need for improvement in both urban and rural contexts.

He concluded with a call for transformation, stating, “When you want something different for yourself, you must move different.

Old keys don’t unlock new doors.”

The Democratic primary is scheduled for March 2026, marking the beginning of a competitive and closely watched race in one of Illinois’ most diverse districts.
