Eric Dale, known as Eric the Puzzler, is set to launch his second citywide treasure hunt in Philadelphia this Friday, expanding on a unique service that has captivated locals since he began creating challenges in 2020.
With the aim of encouraging exploration. Dale has gained a significant following, drawing the attention of organizations such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Mural Arts Philadelphia, as well as the South Street Headhouse District and the Philadelphia airport.
Dale’s rise to fame in the puzzle-making world has been intertwined with his love for Philadelphia’s vibrant public art scene, which he became acquainted with after moving to the city in 2015.
His treasure hunts often weave clues and checkpoints into the fabric of the city’s art, including murals and sculptures, showcasing the hidden gems that Philly has to offer.
“When I moved to Philly, I was pretty quickly struck by how there’s just art everywhere,” Dale reflected.
His passion for art is evident in his puzzles, as he believes they transform normally mundane spots into intriguing destinations.
“You put a piece of art on a wall, that’s suddenly a specific, identifiable location,” Dale noted.
This summer, teams of up to ten players can register to participate in Dale’s new treasure hunt, featuring digital checkpoints scattered throughout the city.
The competition will run all summer long, with prizes awaiting the fastest teams.
The top honor—a two-night staycation package at a waterfront hotel—includes two front-row concert tickets and a prix fixe dinner for six, courtesy of the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation.
Despite the challenges Dale’s puzzles present, he reassures potential participants that they shouldn’t be daunted.
“This is designed for everyday Philadelphians to have a nice puzzle activity they can sink their teeth into this summer,” Dale explained.
He emphasized that excitement and devotion to the activity will lead to enjoyment; those who take their time will still reap a rewarding experience.
Dale’s heartfelt mission with these puzzles is to encourage people to step outside and explore their surroundings.
He passionately expressed, “There’s a lot of world out there.”
