One of Broadway’s most celebrated musicals, The Book of Mormon, is making its way back to San Diego for a limited engagement from June 10-15 at the San Diego Civic Theatre.
Since its debut in 2011, this smash-hit show has captured the hearts of audiences and critics alike, earning accolades such as nine Tony Awards and a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album.
Created by the famed duo behind South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, alongside composer Robert Lopez, known for his work on Disney’s Frozen and Coco, the musical combines sharp satire with catchy songs, following two mismatched Mormon missionaries on their journey to a remote Ugandan village.
This national tour, directed and choreographed by Jennifer Werner, promises the blend of humor and heartfelt storytelling that has made The Book of Mormon a staple in musical theater.
Lead actor Sam McLellan, who plays the ambitious Elder Price, is returning to the San Diego stage after wowing audiences in previous performances and recently commemorating his 500th show in the role.
Times of San Diego spoke with McLellan about his journey in landing the iconic part, the challenges of performing consistently, and the reasons why theatergoers should catch the show—whether for the first time or as returning fans.
Reflecting on the audition process for Elder Price, McLellan shared that his journey began while he was on tour with another production, Anastasia.
“I sent in a tape and was later requested to come in for a callback,” he explained. “After that, I received an appointment for a final callback.”
McLellan had long aspired to perform this role, allowing him to feel confident throughout the audition process. When he received the offer, he was on the tour bus during a quiet period, leading to a memorable but subdued celebration with his friends.
“This was a role I’d always dreamed of doing,” he mentioned, showcasing his excitement over the opportunity.
In discussing how prior experience has shaped his performance, McLellan noted that every role he undertook before The Book of Mormon contributed valuable skills.
“Regular work in front of the audience is key to building an understanding of how to connect with them,” he stated.
He emphasized the importance of feeling secure not only in emotional scenes but also in comedic moments—skills he developed from continuous exposure to live audiences.
Among the various challenges of performing in The Book of Mormon, McLellan cited the demanding vocal performance required to portray Elder Price.
“This show is a monster sing,” he remarked, admitting that sustaining the high-energy tenor throughout the production is no small feat.
Despite the challenges, he finds joy in the growth and development as a singer over the years.
“The connection with the audience is palpable,” he explained, describing the thrill of delivering key moments that resonate with theatergoers.
Those unfamiliar with The Book of Mormon are encouraged to experience the show in San Diego.
McLellan highlighted that it defies conventional musical theater tropes, presenting a fresh take on storytelling.
“It’s the perfect show for new theatergoers,” he asserted.
He reassured more seasoned theater enthusiasts that their laughter-filled evening will also be enriched by genuine heart and soul underpinning the humor.
“For those who have seen the show already, this is the time to come back,” he urged, pointing to notable cast changes since their last performance in the area.
He emphasized the talent of his fellow castmate, Diego Enrico, who plays Elder Cunningham, stating that his performance alone makes the ticket worth it.
As The Book of Mormon returns to San Diego, audiences can look forward to a delightful mix of comedy and compelling storytelling that continues to captivate fans, both new and returning.
Tickets for the limited engagement are available now, promising an unforgettable night at one of Broadway’s most beloved productions.
