The Boston Children’s Chorus (BCC) is set to host its largest Big Sing event to date, featuring approximately 700 young singers from 10 schools throughout Boston’s diverse neighborhoods.
This vibrant performance will showcase students from grades 2 through 6, culminating in a collaborative celebration of music and culture on a grand scale.
The event, scheduled for the 2024-25 school year, will also include special guest artist Tamar Greene, renowned for his role as George Washington in the Broadway production of Hamilton.
BCC’s initiative has expanded this year to include 6 new schools, allowing for a greater number of students to take part in the Big Sing performance.
This accomplishment has been made possible by the support of the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture’s Neighborhood Activation Grant program, which funds community-focused arts projects that enhance public spaces and foster community well-being.
Under the guidance of BCC’s Conductor of In-School Programs Robert McFletcher-Jones, students have engaged in a series of workshops leading up to the concert.
Weekly rehearsals began in May, providing students the opportunity to refine their performance skills and collaborate with peers.
This concert marks a historic moment as it will be the first time all 700 participating students perform together as part of a BCC program.

A significant aspect of this year’s concert is a special performance titled Better Together!, which pays tribute to the 1963 Children’s Crusade and the pivotal 1974 busing decision aimed at desegregating Boston public schools.
The program features a six-piece live band and highlights songs that celebrate triumph, joy, and unity, drawing inspiration from a rich tapestry of musical traditions that reflect Boston’s diverse cultural heritage.
The 1974 busing decision represents a critical and controversial chapter in Boston’s civil rights history, emerging as a compelling backdrop for the concert.
The collaboration of students across the city serves as a poignant reminder of the role young people play in advocating for social change, reminiscent of the Birmingham children who marched for justice in 1963.
Participating schools in this uplifting event include the Mildred Avenue K-8 School, Samuel W. Mason Pilot Elementary, The Oliver Hazard Perry School, Higginson Lewis School, The Mather School, Codman Academy, Grew Elementary, Bradley Elementary School, Ellison Parks, and the Ellis School.
The Boston Children’s Chorus was founded in 2003 by Hubie Jones, a civic leader dedicated to addressing the social challenges faced by Boston’s underserved children and communities.
BCC is recognized as Boston’s “Ambassadors of Harmony” by The Boston Globe, embodying the power of music as a tool for connecting the city’s diverse communities, fostering empathy, and inspiring social inquiry.
The after-school choral programs offered by BCC encompass 11 choirs with singers representing 110 different zip codes across and around Boston.
BCC also collaborates with schools to provide in-school choral education in neighborhoods like Mattapan, Roxbury, South Boston, East Boston, Allston, and Chelsea.
The organization hosts more than 50 performances annually, showcasing their talent in various prestigious venues such as Boston Symphony Hall, Royal Albert Hall in London, Sydney Opera House, and even the White House.
Support for BCC comes from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, and a grant from the Boston Cultural Council, a local agency funded by the state and managed by the Mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture.
Tamar Greene, the featured guest artist for the Big Sing event, has made a significant impact as the longest-running George Washington in Hamilton on Broadway.
Before his role in New York, he performed this iconic character in the Hamilton Chicago company.
His extensive resume also includes Broadway National Tours of Love Never Dies, The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, and Ragtime, for which he earned a Theater Circle Award for Outstanding Performer in a Musical.
In addition to his theatrical achievements, Greene has been featured in several orchestral performances, including collaborations with renowned symphony orchestras and appearances on prominent platforms such as PBS and Comedy Central.
Greene continues to captivate audiences with his talents as a voice-over and commercial actor, while also making his music available on all streaming platforms, including his single, Soaring.
