A significant online feud erupted between Elon Musk and Donald Trump on Thursday, June 5, as tensions escalated following Musk’s criticism of the president’s controversial tax and immigration bill.
In a public display of discord, Trump branded the Tesla CEO as ‘CRAZY,’ while Musk retaliated by claiming that Trump would not have secured his position in the 2024 election without his backing.
The drama began earlier in the week, on Tuesday, June 3, when Musk labeled Trump’s sprawling spending bill a ‘disgusting abomination.’
Musk expressed his dissatisfaction openly, stating, ‘I’m sorry, but I just can’t stand it anymore.’
He described the bill as a ‘massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill’ and admonished its supporters, saying they should be ashamed of their votes.
He elaborated that the legislation would significantly escalate the national budget deficit to a staggering $2.5 trillion and impose unsustainable debt on American citizens.
This critique came just days after Musk’s formal exit from his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
In response to Musk’s statements, Trump conveyed his disappointment during a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, indicating that their once amicable relationship might be at risk.
He remarked to reporters, ‘Look, Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore.’
Taking to his Truth Social platform, Trump suggested that the government could save billions by cutting ties with Musk’s companies, asserting, ‘The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts.’
Trump expressed surprise that President Joe Biden had not acted on this.
Musk’s response was swift, condemning Trump’s comments as ‘such ingratitude,’ considering his financial support of over $270 million for Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
He stated, ‘Whatever. Keep the EV/solar incentive cuts in the bill, even though no oil & gas subsidies are touched (very unfair!!),’ denouncing the excessive spending in the legislation as unreasonable.
He then went on to argue that without his contributions, Trump would have been unable to claim victory in the election, asserting, ‘Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate.’
The feud escalated further when Musk claimed that documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation had not been released due to Trump’s involvement.
He tweeted, ‘Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT.’
Musk concluded with an ominous warning, saying, ‘Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out.’
This ongoing exchange between Musk and Trump highlights a dramatic fallout from a once-productive partnership in the worlds of technology and politics.
