The Barnes Foundation is set to host a vibrant array of programs this June, providing opportunities for Philadelphians to immerse themselves in art, music, and culture.
Among the highlights is the First Friday event on June 6, which combines an evening of art with live performances and film screenings.
This monthly mixer includes performances by Dominican artist Yasser Tejeda, who will share music from his latest album, La Madrugá, featuring a fascinating mix of Afro-Caribbean rhythms interwoven with traditional influences like merengue, jazz, and rock.
In addition to Tejeda’s performances, DJ Bobby Flowers will take the stage on the West Terrace.
The evening will also showcase short films from the Philadelphia Latino Arts & Film Festival (PHLAFF), providing a platform for both emerging and established Latine creatives.
The film screening will begin at 8 p.m. and aims to foster cross-cultural understanding while celebrating the richness of diverse cultural experiences.
On June 10, members of The Barnes can engage in a two-hour workshop dedicated to the renowned French artist Henri Matisse.
Led by author Jeff Koehler, participants will delve into Matisse’s artistic journey in Tangier, Morocco, where he sought inspiration after the constraints of cubism in Paris.
This session will explore Matisse’s compelling work, ‘The Seated Riffian’, which remains a highlight of the Main Gallery at the Barnes, revealing intimate aspects of both the painting and the artist’s time in Morocco.
Later in the month, on June 16, The Barnes will present the Looking and Listening series.
This series will investigate the interplay between visual art and music, enhancing the appreciation of both disciplines.
Members will be treated to recordings, including those by Stravinsky and Ravel, along with African American spirituals.
The discussions will focus on how art perception transforms through the combination of sight and sound.
This session will particularly emphasize the relationship between impressionist art and music, featuring insights into Claude Monet’s paintings and the compositions of Claude Debussy, who is recognized as the father of musical impressionism.
The program promises to include Barnes Method-inspired exercises, enhancing the audience’s experience through live performances by celebrated flutist Mimi Stillman.
The month will culminate with the Curators in Conversation event on June 29, marking the opening of the ‘From Paris to Provence: French Painting at the Barnes’ exhibition.
This conversation will take place in the Comcast NBCUniversal Auditorium, with an online livestream option for broader accessibility.
Curator Cindy Kang will guide attendees in examining how geographical contexts shaped the work of modern painters from the late 19th to early 20th centuries.
In-person attendees will also gain exclusive access to the exhibition itself, enriching their experience of the works on display.
With a rich lineup of events this June, The Barnes Foundation continues to be a hub for art enthusiasts and those interested in the intersection of various cultural expressions.
