Earlier this week, the U.S. Women’s National Team delivered an impressive performance with a 4-0 victory over Jamaica. This match was particularly significant as the team honored longtime defender Becky Sauerbrunn, who recently retired.
Ally Sentnor and Lynn Biyendolo each netted two goals during the match against Jamaica. Sentnor opened the scoring in the 19th minute, celebrating by making a heart shape with her hands. She quickly added a second goal 10 minutes later off a deflection.
The young forward, who was named the 2024 U.S. Soccer Young Player of the Year, now has four international goals under her belt. Sentnor praised her teammates for their cooperation and skill in advancing the play on the field.
Biyendolo, who made a brief but impactful appearance as a substitute, scored her first goal in the 60th minute and then added her second in the 88th minute with an assist from Avery Patterson. With this performance, Biyendolo has now reached a total of 24 career goals.
U.S. coach Emma Hayes commented on the team’s growth over the past year, highlighting the development of players like Sentnor and Biyendolo, who have become vital assets for the team.
“Unbelievable finisher” was how Hayes described Sentnor, while noting the positive impact of Biyendolo’s late-game contributions as crucial to the team’s success.
Phallon Tullis-Joyce, who has taken on the goalkeeping responsibilities, made her second consecutive start for the U.S. with the aim of establishing herself as a successor to longtime goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, who retired last year. Tullis-Joyce maintained a clean sheet throughout the match.
Hayes emphasized the importance of Tullis-Joyce forming strong connections with her teammates, noting that while she may not have faced shots, her growth within the game is evident.
The victory over Jamaica marked the U.S. team’s momentum following a previous 3-0 win against China. Originally set to face China for two matches, the second was canceled due to their withdrawal, allowing Jamaica to step in as the replacement opponent.
Before the friendly match, the U.S. took a moment to honor Sauerbrunn, who had a storied 16-year international career and is a two-time Women’s World Cup champion as well as an Olympic gold medalist.
Fans in attendance received a bobblehead in Sauerbrunn’s likeness and participated in a pregame ceremony, giving her a standing ovation and chanting her name.
In addition to celebrating her contributions to the game, Sauerbrunn recently announced she is expecting her first child with partner Zola Short, adding a personal milestone to her life outside of soccer. She also brought her experience into the match by serving as a television commentator for the event.
Looking ahead, the U.S. Women’s National Team will shift focus to future competitions, with upcoming matches scheduled against Ireland on June 26 in Commerce City, Colorado, and June 29 in Cincinnati. They are also set to compete against Canada on July 6 in Washington D.C., continuing their journey on the international stage.
As the U.S. Men’s National Team prepares for their friendly against Turkey, excitement builds among fans hoping to see continued success and standout performances on the pitch.
