Los Angeles is facing significant unrest as the Trump administration prepares to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops in response to escalating protests following recent immigration raids in the city.
Demonstrations against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions began on June 6, when federal agents arrested at least 44 individuals during a series of enforcement operations.
Protesters, some carrying Mexican flags and wearing masks, gathered in various locations around Los Angeles, particularly concentrated in the Paramount area.
By the night of June 7, a second protest drew approximately 60 demonstrators chanting slogans like “ICE out of LA!” showing the growing frustration among immigrant communities in the region.
In a statement, the White House emphasized that President Donald Trump signed a memorandum to mobilize National Guard troops to combat what he termed “lawlessness that has been allowed to fester” in Los Angeles.
Defending the decision, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned that the Pentagon was ready to call in active-duty troops if violence escalated further.
In his message on Truth Social, President Trump criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, expressing that if they could not handle the situation, the federal government would intervene decisively.
Governor Newsom denounced the deployment as a “purposefully inflammatory” action, creating a rift between state and federal authorities.
As tensions rise, Vice President JD Vance described the protesters as “insurrectionists” attacking law enforcement, while Stephen Miller, a hardliner on immigration issues, labeled the demonstrations as a “violent insurrection”.
Despite the heated rhetoric, the administration has not invoked the Insurrection Act, which allows the president to deploy military forces to maintain order.
However, officials noted that the quick deployment of National Guard troops can occur within 24 hours, illustrating the administration’s readiness to respond to civil disorder.
Video footage emerging from the Paramount protest depicted a show of force from security personnel, equipped with gas masks and lined up against demonstrators.
Eyewitness accounts indicated that some protesters were detained, though official confirmation of any arrests has yet to be released.
Protester Ron Gochez emphasized that the immigrant community is prepared to resist any attempts to target workers without facing organized pushback.
The prior evening’s protests kicked off in reaction to ICE’s arrests, which according to the Department of Homeland Security, involved approximately 1,000 individuals participating in the June 6 demonstrations.
However, these figures are yet to be verified by independent sources.
Concerns have also been raised regarding the accessibility of legal representation for those detained, with immigration rights leaders describing the situation as troubling.
President Trump continues to champion an aggressive approach to immigration enforcement, aiming to deport unprecedented numbers and tighten security along the US-Mexico border.
The White House’s strategic goal includes an ambitious target for ICE to detain at least 3,000 migrants daily, a move that has sparked significant backlash.
