The White House has recently put forth a federal rescission package to Congress that proposes to retroactively eliminate appropriated funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). This move threatens to severely impact PBS stations across the nation, including Vegas PBS, which could face significant cutbacks or even shut down essential services that serve the community.
For decades, PBS has been a reliable source of quality educational programming, trustworthy news coverage, and critical communication during crises. Millions of Americans depend on services provided by public broadcasting to enrich their lives and benefit their communities.
The current federal funding for public broadcasting is about $1.60 per person annually, enabling stations like Vegas PBS to operate with remarkable efficiency. Each dollar received from CPB enables Vegas PBS to generate $8 locally, which directly supports local jobs, partnerships, productions, and educational services tailored to the needs of the Southern Nevada community.
Established as Southern Nevada’s sole PBS provider since 1968, Vegas PBS has played a vital role in educating generations of children.
