Philadelphia’s vibrant jazz scene is buzzing this week as the city celebrates the 25th anniversary of Ars Nova Workshop with a multitude of performances. Music lovers can catch standout shows almost every night, showcasing some of the most innovative and talented musicians in the genre. From Afro-Cuban rhythms to avant-garde explorations, this week has something for everyone.

On Wednesday, City Winery will host the extraordinary Pedrito Martínez, known for his mastery of Afro-Cuban percussion. His dynamic conga and batá drumming creates an electric atmosphere, and his recent album, Ilusión Óptica, features a stellar cast of musicians. Martínez’s collaborations with high-profile artists and his ability to ignite a performance make this show unmissable.

As the week unfolds, on Monday, Solar Myth will spotlight tenor saxophonist James Brandon Lewis. With his electrifying quartet and a new album titled Abstraction is Deliverance, Lewis promises an exciting night of music. His energetic performance is sure to showcase the collaborative spirit of jazz as he plays alongside Aruán Ortiz, Brad Jones, and Chad Taylor.

Following that, on Wednesday at Solar Myth, Dan Weiss will present his Quartet. Featuring an impressive lineup of improvisers, Weiss’s latest album, Unclassified Affections, delights with its intricate balance of detail and grand expression. This performance is set to challenge listeners while offering an unforgettable auditory experience.

On Thursday, Solar Myth will also host the Brew Trio, a collective of avant-garde musicians. Founded in the late 1990s, the trio consists of bassist Reggie Workman, koto master Miya Masaoka, and percussionist Gerry Hemingway. Also on Friday, Wayne Smith, Jr. will perform with his quintet at Chris’ Jazz Café. Recognized as an accomplished drummer within the Sun Ra Arkestra, Smith is stepping into the spotlight as a bandleader. Finally, on June 15, the renowned Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will perform at Marian Anderson Hall. The concert will also feature an early performance by young musicians from The Philadelphia Orchestra and Ensemble Arts Philly, showcasing the next generation’s talent.
