As summer breaks begin, many school districts in and around Houston are stepping up to combat food insecurity among students by providing free meals.
According to a study by the Food Research & Action Center, millions of children rely on school cafeterias for breakfast and lunch during the academic year, and that need often intensifies during the summer months.
Betti Wiggins, deputy chief of Houston ISD Nutrition Services, stated, “This program plays a critical role in keeping our students healthy and nourished year-round.”
This sentiment is echoed by nearby districts, with Susan D’Amico, executive director of Child Nutrition Services at Aldine ISD, emphasizing the importance of good nutrition: “Aldine children need good nutrition year-round so they can learn, grow and succeed in life.”
In response to this ongoing need, several districts across the greater Houston area are offering free breakfast and lunch to students at no cost throughout the summer months.
The Texas Department of Agriculture has launched a summer meal site map on its website to assist families in finding nearby meal distribution locations.
**Houston ISD** will kick off its summer meal program starting Wednesday, continuing through July 18. Students can receive free meals, with no registration or ID required, at select campuses from Monday to Friday.
Meals must be consumed on-site, with breakfast served from 7:15 to 7:55 a.m., and lunch hours varying by campus but typically beginning around 11 a.m.
This program is open to children 18 years of age or younger, as well as students with disabilities enrolled in HISD who are 21 years old and younger.
**Fort Bend ISD** will also provide free meals, with nine campuses offering breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday until July 17. Similar to HISD, Fort Bend meals must be consumed on-site.
Eligible students include those 18 years old or younger, as well as enrolled students with disabilities up to the age of 21.
In the Katy ISD area, families can access free summer meals as well, with eight designated locations serving children 18 years and younger.
Details regarding breakfast and lunch times can be found on the respective websites, and students are required to eat the provided meals within the cafeteria facility.
Over in **Cy-Fair ISD**, breakfast and lunch will be served through July 31, available on Monday through Thursday.
The district’s website provides a comprehensive layout of daily menus and meal distribution locations.
Aldine ISD’s summer meals program will operate Monday through Thursday, predominantly throughout June.
The district’s website lists the specific locations and times for breakfast and lunch services. Most lunch sites conclude operations around 12:30 p.m.
**Spring ISD** offers free meals at six campuses Monday through Thursday until July 17.
While breakfast schedules vary by campus, lunch will be served from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Notably, students aren’t required to be enrolled in Spring ISD to receive a meal, provided they are 18 years old or younger.
These initiatives by Houston-area school districts are crucial in ensuring that children continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer months, alleviating food insecurity and supporting their well-being.
