The Federal Bureau of Investigation has announced that it is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a man wanted for throwing rocks at police and law enforcement vehicles during a protest in Paramount this past Saturday.
The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Elpidio Reyna from Compton, is facing charges of assault on a federal officer, as per the FBI’s statement.
Authorities report that the incidents occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Alondra Boulevard. During the protest, Reyna allegedly hurled rocks at law enforcement vehicles, resulting in injuries to a federal officer and damage to government property.
In response to this escalation of unrest, the FBI is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for any credible information leading to Reyna’s arrest and conviction.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass spoke out regarding the situation, linking the chaos to recent immigration raids conducted by the Trump administration.
During a press conference, she urged federal authorities to cease such operations, stating that they foster fear and uncertainty within the city. “I am hopeful that the federal government will hear our plea: Stop the raids,” Bass emphasized.
She described the current atmosphere in the city as chaotic and unnecessary, expressing a desire for the federal government to support local efforts to promote peace and stability rather than exacerbate tensions.
While Bass has communicated with members of the Trump administration, she noted that she has not had direct discussions with President Donald Trump regarding these issues.
“This situation makes me feel like our city is actually a test case, a test case for what happens when the federal government moves in and takes authority away from the state or local government,” said Bass.
During the same press conference, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell acknowledged the deployment of 700 U.S. Marines to Los Angeles, referring to it as a logistical challenge that could potentially lead to confusion amid ongoing protests.
He stated, “The introduction of federal military personnel without direct coordination creates logistical challenges and risks confusion during a critical incident.”
In light of the increasingly tense situation, McDonnell noted that the LAPD has mobilized additional resources, allowing for the deployment of 400 more officers to the protests.
Bass reiterated her concerns about the impact of President Trump’s immigration policies on local communities, highlighting the fear many Angelenos are experiencing.
She remarked, “I can’t emphasize enough the level of fear and terror that is in Angelenos right now,” as residents worry about potential enforcement actions targeting their homes or workplaces.
The mayor blamed the escalation of protests on federal interventions, specifically noting that the situation took a turn for the worse following the federal government’s involvement.
As protests continue in downtown Los Angeles, local leaders are calling for a reassessment of federal actions moving forward, seeking a collaborative approach to restore order and community trust.
