Nintendo Switch 2: A Bigger and Better Iteration of the Beloved Console

The Nintendo Switch 2 has arrived, boasting enhancements in speed, power, and overall performance compared to its predecessor. However, one pertinent question arises: how much bigger is it?

The Switch 2 measures half an inch (12.7mm) taller and 1.2 inches (30.48mm) wider than the original model, along with a weight increase of 0.22 pounds (99.79 grams). But it’s not just about the numbers; it’s also about how it feels in your hands and when you’re playing.

Aesthetically, the Switch 2 feels less vibrant compared to earlier models, such as the original Switch or the OLED variant. Comfort also appears to be an issue, as many find handheld gaming less enjoyable with the new design. Yet, intriguingly, standing it next to the original Switch highlights its newfound size; the original, which once felt perfectly portable, now appears quite dainty in comparison.

When compared to the Switch OLED, which introduced a slightly larger screen but no significant enhancements in power, the Switch 2 takes the lead in dimensions. The OLED’s size was appreciated, but the Switch 2 has taken that concept even further, providing an adequate gaming experience that seems suited for its functionality, even if it does not boast improved comfort in handheld mode.

The Switch 2’s dimensions also allow it to stand up against other prominent handheld consoles, notably Valve’s Steam Deck. The Steam Deck is larger and more comfortable but sacrifices some portability, a feature where the Switch 2 excels—and thus it cannot escape comparison to other ultra-portable devices, such as the Analogue Pocket.

Digging deeper into the realm of gaming, the design of the Switch 2 can also be contrasted with major home consoles from both past and present. Channeling nostalgia, comparisons to the PlayStation 2 also emerge due to its lasting design impact, notwithstanding a slew of other consoles such as the PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox Series X, and even the GameCube. Seeing the Switch 2 alongside such iconic devices raises interesting conversations regarding its place in gaming history and design.

Beyond just consoles, it’s intriguing to see the Switch 2 stacked next to various gaming and gaming-adjacent paraphernalia. This helps illustrate its dimensions and gives context to its design philosophy.

So, how do we feel about the Switch 2? Is it a triumph in console evolution, outshining its forerunners, or does it still have some areas to improve in terms of comfort and aesthetic appeal? Only time will tell if it lands at the top of personal tier lists for console design.

The conversation regarding the Switch 2 and its new size and design remains vibrant and open-ended. It certainly promises a fresh chapter in Nintendo’s storied console history.
