In a major transformation for one of Chicago’s most recognizable landmarks, the Signature Room, which occupied the 95th and 96th floors of the John Hancock Center for over 30 years, has closed its doors.
The closure, effective September 2023, was attributed to economic challenges, prompting a fresh vision for the iconic space.
Magnicity, the French company that owns the 94th floor observation deck, 360 Chicago, announced plans to convert the upper floors into Chicago’s first-ever multi-story observation deck and a private event venue.
According to Nichole Benolken, managing director at 360 Chicago, the redevelopment will include a three-story atrium, along with a significant 14,000-square-foot event space, focusing on private gatherings such as weddings and corporate events.
The new design will extend the observation deck experience to two stories, with the lower 95th floor enhancing the existing attractions, while the 96th floor will primarily function as an event space.
Benolken emphasized that these three floors will seamlessly combine into “one spectacular and cohesive space connected by a bespoke grand staircase.”
This redevelopment aims to inject much-needed investment into the area, enhancing the visitor experience while honoring the historical and architectural significance of the Hancock building.
Benolken highlighted that the multi-story observation deck will stand as a rare feature globally, making this a unique addition to Chicago’s offerings.
While specific details about the visitor experience remain under wraps, Benolken mentioned that the floors are projected to reopen within 18 to 24 months.
The ambitious project, expected to cost tens of millions of dollars, will transform nearly 30,000 square feet of the structure.
Magnicity has teamed up with renowned firms for this undertaking, including Skidmore, Owings & Merrill—the architectural minds behind the Hancock building—and WB Immersive, a global leader in designing and producing immersive experiences.
Pierre-Antoine Batail, head of creative strategy at WB Immersive, noted that the project is still in the conceptual design phase and specifics about the envisioned space cannot yet be disclosed.
The decision to shift towards an immersive space rather than reopening a restaurant stemmed from extensive market research and consultations with Chicagoans and visitors.
Benolken explained that the aim behind this decision was to create an experience that resonates with both locals and tourists, fostering excitement about the revamped space.
“We’re creating an experience that champions the city, the diversity of our communities and our people, and also really conveys the beauty and the wonder of our views up here on the top of this iconic structure,” Benolken stated.
The Signature Room and its lounge held a cherished position in Chicago’s dining scene until their abrupt closure last year, signaling a significant shift in the use and purpose of the Hancock building’s upper levels.
With these developments, Chicago’s skyline is set to gain an innovative attraction, promising to offer stunning views and memorable experiences to all who visit.
