A significant milestone in fostering economic and cultural exchanges between Mexico and North America was achieved with the launch of the first nonstop flight from Philadelphia to Mexico City on June 6.
This decision came as a direct response to heartfelt requests from the Mexican and Latino community and followed years of negotiations.
The event was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Gate A11, with participation from the Consulate of Mexico, executives from Philadelphia’s International Airport, and representatives from Aeromexico, Delta Airlines, local government, and other stakeholders.
Atif Saeed, CEO of Philadelphia International Airport, opened the ceremony by expressing gratitude to Mariachi Pedro Villaseñor for their musical performance and acknowledged everyone involved for making the day festive.
“It’s not every day that we celebrate a new international flight; today is a historic day,” Saeed said enthusiastically.
On that inaugural flight, the Consulate accompanied a delegation of business representatives and community leaders to Mexico City.
Saeed reiterated the importance of this new service, stating, “This visit will continue to foster ties and connections that will ensure the success of this service in the future.”
The economic impact of these flights is projected to generate $30 million annually, which reflects the growing demand for direct connectivity between the two cities.
The timing is particularly advantageous as Philadelphia is set to host many significant events this year, including being a co-host for the FIFA World Cup in 2026, when the tournament will begin with a match in Mexico City.
Ivan Vukov, Aeromexico’s Director of Sales in the U.S., expressed pride in the airline’s nonstop service and the opportunity it presents to connect communities.
He remarked, “We look forward to serving you daily with the high-quality service we provide.”
Since becoming a partner with Delta Airlines nearly eight years ago, Aeromexico has successfully transported over 50 million passengers between the U.S. and Mexico, developing the largest flight network in this segment.
Vukov noted that community interest in nonstop flights had been strong for a long time, and he acknowledged the airline’s internal advocacy for this new route.
The airline plans to expand its U.S. routes, with five new paths by the end of July and a total of over 30 new routes introduced within the past 18 months.
Vukov anticipated that Philadelphia will become one of the “crown jewels” of the airline’s network.
Mexican Consul General Carlos G. Obrador Garrido Cuesta highlighted the opportunity this flight provides to strengthen ties between Philadelphia and Mexico City, encouraging more Mexicans to visit Philadelphia.
He underscored the significance of consistent travel in supporting the sustainability of these direct flights for years to come.
Prior to this development, travelers heading to Mexico City were required to make at least one stop, making travel considerably longer.
The airport celebration featured mariachi music, traditional Mexican breakfast, and free candies, creating a vibrant atmosphere for all attendees.
Key stakeholders involved in reinstating these nonstop flights included the Convention & Visitors Bureau, Philadelphia Representative Office, Economic Development Office, Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, World Affairs Council, and the United States-Mexico Chamber of Commerce.
