Weather Update: Showers and Humidity Persist in New England

As we move into Wednesday, New England will experience mostly dry conditions throughout the day, but moisture-rich air may still produce a shower or two, so it’s advisable to pack an umbrella just in case.

Partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected to linger into Wednesday night, with a low chance of showers as temperatures drop into the mid and upper 60s.

The weather on Wednesday will be influenced by a warm front advancing through New England from the southwest. This front will bring warmer air, increased humidity, and the potential for spot showers across Greater Boston and much of Southern New England.

A strong southerly air flow associated with the front will result in heavy cloud coverage during the day, although there may be brief moments where sunshine breaks through the clouds.

Given the moisture present in the air, there remains a possibility for isolated showers both in the morning and evening. If sunshine manages to pierce through the clouds, it could lead to localized downpours due to additional heating. However, any precipitation is expected to be brief and manageable.

During the morning commute, expect temperatures in the mid- to upper 60s, with daytime highs rising to the mid- and upper 70s. A few locations, particularly around or west of I-95, may even reach the 80-degree mark when sunshine breaks through.

The humidity will be noticeably higher in the morning, with dew points around sunrise already hovering in the low 60s. By the end of the workday, the air will feel thick and heavy, with dew points climbing into the upper 60s.

Looking ahead to Thursday, conditions will feel akin to Southern Florida, with dew points reaching into the low 70s. High dew points are often the precursor to the formation of storms, and New England, including Boston, will have a potential thunderstorm risk by Thursday afternoon and evening.

With a mix of sun and clouds, temperatures are expected to soar to around 90 degrees in Boston, with even higher readings possible to the west of the city. The humid air combined with the atmosphere’s instability will create ideal conditions for a classic line of thunderstorms to develop as a cold front approaches from the west.

Some of these storms may become severe, bringing damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfalls. It is anticipated that any thunderstorm activity in Boston will occur after the evening commute; however, this timing may change as Thursday approaches.

So far, the weather trend indicates that high pressure is likely to dominate the weather over New England from Saturday into Sunday. There is a possibility for a few showers to develop well west of Boston, but the outlook is becoming increasingly optimistic for a completely dry weekend ahead.

If this holds true, it would mark a significant change for Boston, ending a streak of 14 consecutive weekends during which at least a trace of rain has been recorded.

In specific regions across the area on Wednesday:

In Greater Boston, the forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies with highs reaching the upper 70s. A spot shower is possible, with dew points expected to be in the upper 60s. Overnight lows are projected to settle in the upper 60s, accompanied by a lingering chance of drizzle or fog.

Southeastern Massachusetts will see mostly cloudy conditions with some patchy fog in the morning. The clouds will persist through the afternoon, with a slight chance of sprinkles. Highs are expected to reach the low 70s, and overnight lows will drop into the mid-60s, maintaining mostly cloudy skies.

In Central and Western Massachusetts, there is a chance for brief showers under mostly cloudy skies. Highs may reach the upper 70s in the Berkshires, with some areas from Worcester to Springfield potentially hitting 80 degrees. Dew points will rise towards 70, contributing to a muggy feel. Overnight, temperatures will remain warm in the mid to upper 60s with occasional shower chances.

The Cape and Islands region will experience mostly cloudy skies with a low likelihood of sprinkles and potential for some fog early and late in the day. Highs will be in the upper 60s to low 70s, and overnight lows are expected to remain in the mid-60s.

Rhode Island’s forecast includes mostly cloudy skies with mid-70s for highs and a chance of sprinkles or showers, adding to the muggy conditions. Overnight lows will settle into the mid-60s.

In New Hampshire, expect more clouds than sun, with temperatures pushing into the upper 70s and low 80s. An isolated shower is a possibility, and overnight temperatures will remain in the 60s, paired with a chance for more isolated showers.

Finally, in Vermont and Maine, anticipate a mix of sun and clouds, leading to more cloudiness by the afternoon. Scattered showers may occur during the day with highs reaching the upper 70s and low 80s, as humidity continues to rise with dew points in the mid- to upper-60s by afternoon.
